I have a 98 C5 with the base model heater/AC controls (non-climate control)
No matter where I set the vent selector, the air or heat does not seem to blow very well from any of the ducts.

The fan runs fine, and the heat and AC seem to work OK, it is like the vent flapper is stuck or something.

Is the vent control on this type of heater electric, vacuum, or mechanical?

Maybe a fuse or a relay problem?

If anyone has seen this, please post or email maxdose@aol.com

Thanks,
Lenny Kerns

A friend of mine had only the driver side vents working. They were going to take the car in but, the next day when they cranked it up the problem was gone. I had a problem with the climate control and had to take the car to a dealer. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply, Les.

Based on reports of other HVAC trouble, I must either see the dealer, or wait till it fixes itself.

I bought the car used and a mechanic friend of mine told me it could be a wad of cash stashed in the vents, he has seen it before, or maybe a big bag of blow ;)

With my luck, it is a 600 buck repair :(

I had a problem as well and took my Vette to the dealer. The vaccum hose had a leak in it and the air was only blowing in from the window defroster. You might want to check that because my A/C and heater were working fine as well.

Hi there,
Your mode door operations are all vacuum controlled.
This plastic hosing, is located, for the most part, underneath your battery tray, on the passenger side of the car.
There is most likely a hole in the line, causing this condition.
Start the car, and listen for a hissing noise eminating from under the battery area.
If you hear something, you know you have it right, c4c5:hb

Thanks Gentelmen.

This is just the kind of information I was looking for to get me pointed in the right direction.

Now I will keep my fingers crossed and with luck, it will be something this simple.

You are welcome. That is what we are all here for, to help each other out. Good luck and keep us updated.

I tried what was suggested, about listening for hissing, but did not hear anything. But, with the engine running, it may have been masked by the noise from the engine.

I removed the battery and the battery tray, and looked for a vac line, but could not see anything that looked like one.

I also removed the drivers side fuel rail cover, and noticed a hose with a blue plastic valve of some sort, at the rear of the engine. this valve has an electrical connection to it. There is no line attached to the rear of this valve, only to the front. It looked like vacuum line, but I don't know.

Should there be a hose on the rear of the valve?

Thanks again,

Lenny Kerns

HI there,
I would also suggest that you look along the outside of the frame rail, toward the back, under the battery tray. You see the PCM, then look at the black canister behind the PCM bracket.
The black canister is your vacuum canister. From the bottom, there is a hose, this is the one that goes into the wiring conduit.
Besttoyou, and please keep us posted, c4c5:hb

To get at the canister, do you need to remove the inner or outer fender?
Or can it be reached thru the door opening, or from underneath.

Can't look at it now because car is in garage, tight against wall.
As far away from harm as possible :)
