I am considering Doug's Headers side pipes very seriously, but I'm concerned about unintended consequences. I am thinking about the ceramic coated variety. Will they burn plug wires, heat the starter, and leak at the heads?

The things you mention can be a concern with most any header. I had these on my '67 427 and only replaced the header gaskets once when I got it and never needed to again. I also never had a plug wire burn but I had high performance high temp wires. If starter heat soak is a problem there are many different heat wraps available that will help. I had no problem.

The biggest unintended consequence of these header sidepipes is burn injury to passengers. It seems like no matter how many times you warn people they still manage to get their legs against the side pipe when getting out of the car. Very few will make that mistake twice though. Bare legs sizzle more that ones with jeans on. You will get burned too occasionally.

Are they worth it? Well, the sound is adictive. The faster you go the better they sound. The radio is useless over about 30 mph. However I never felt like I wanted to remove them when I had that car. They were just too much fun.

Well Tom, I was considering the ceramic coated ones cause the are supposed to be cooler, but I'm skeptical. As far as women getting burned, well I need something to amuse me :-):W There are three different baffles. Quite, medium, and loud. The ladder would probably suit me. Were yours baffled?

My biggest concerns are hot starters, plug wires getting burned, and leaks, but looks like I can put these concerns to rest.

I was also told that Hookers are not the quality they used to be, and Doug's are better. That's why I am inclined to go with Doug's.

Back then they only had one insert. They weren't too loud around town but made good noise at full throttle. Mine were Dougs. I also had a set of Dougs 4 tubes on my '59 back in the early '70s. They were very heavily built and never warped or leaked. The only problem I ever had was when they initially came in at the speed shop I got 2 right sides in the box. Only took 2 days to get another set.
