Hello guys. I too feel the pain . Been struggling with a high idle problem . numerous talks with TPIS , checking for vac leaks , playing with the IAC, TPS, TB....ETC...they told me the puters are a little wierd on the 85 and that I will need to drive it to get it learned :gap. Sooo I,m going to drive it this weekend ,weather permitting, finally. Everthing else seems fine ,not getting any codes . My scanner and fuel press. gage were ordered Thurs. Hope to get them today. Just gotta put the tares on her and getter down from the stands. :) Ken ,your day will come .I promise. There, feel better?:L
Chris ,that oil leak is a strange one . You'll find it. :)

Maybe after BG, you can just follow me south and we can tinker with it for a few days at my place.

Chris, I recently talked to some friends who are still living in Florida (Vero Beach) so I have been toying with that idea. The only plans I had for the northern leg of the trip were to meet Lou (Rowdy1) and hit the Keystone Nationals in PA before heading west again. Your idea may be the way to go, but then I won't get to meet Lou or Mad-Mic or drop in on Nut in that case.

PAIN?......I Got Pain

I wasn't going to post my problem because I have total faith in the friend that's helping me. I mentioned part of it a while back, and actually "thought" we had found and fixed it, but alas, no such luck. I'm really not looking for any help (although it never hurts) on this as it is a REAL stumper and my guy is VERY good.
Since you guys were sharing your "pain" I figured, what the hell, here's mine.
Last year on occaision when I put the key in the ignition, I would turn to on and have nothing, no gauges, no starter, nothing. I would wiggle the wires behind the ignition switch and I'd get power, start the car and drive it with no problems. After looking at the fuses and the wiring toilet under the dash, I asked a friend and coworker if he'd be interested in rewiring my 62 as I'm at a complete loss when it comes to electricity. He accepted the challenge and last November I drove it to his garage and the wiring started. We removed EVERY SINGLE wire from the car and they were replaced with a brand new 18 circuit Painless wiring harness. EVERY terminal, connector, head and tail light pigtail was put in new.
The day came to test everything and everything worked perfectly, not a glitch anywhere. I was finally going to have a dependable (electric) classic car. The engine, drive line has been done to my specs and runs VERY well.
I drove the car to the local cruise nights for about two weeks when one night, as I was driving along, second gear, it died, like someone turned the key off. I had all gauges and cranking power but no spark. In total disbelief, I called my friend and he was shocked as well, told me what to check and call him back if it didn't start. I checked the obvious and found nothing loose or not connected. I hit the key again and it fired and ran the rest of the night, and about four or five more times in the next two weeks.
Then it started happening again, more frequently, driving along and it would lose spark, let it sit and it would fire and run. Not settling for anything less than perfect, my friend began to trouble shoot and we found nothing. I have a complete MSD ignition system so, we decided to call them and ask them for some pointers. As we're told, a coil can go bad and come back to life again as can a magnetic pickup in the distributer, but the 6AL box, will not, if it goes bad, that's it, the car will not run, period.
The MSD tech. gave us a couple things to try and test which we did, and it "appeared" that there may be a problem with the 6AL box. So, out it came, shipped it back to Texas and three weeks later it came back with a paper saying they really found nothing wrong, but replaced a couple final transistors seeing as how they had it. It was bench tested and was fine. Put it back in, the car ran for one week and died. I have since replaced the MSD Blaster coil, the magnetic pickup and the ignition switch.
And guess what? IT STILL DIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EVERYTHING, is new, there's nothing left, yet, I'm right where I was the very first time it died back in April. So far, it's died about ten or more times, and with all but one time, I was able to get it started and drive it home. Once it came home on the flatbed.
So you see my brothers & sisters, with Carlisle coming up, and not being able to attend any of the nightly cruises, or just getting in it to take a drive after all this work, is truely PAIN.
I don't even feel any better after posting this, because it's been eating me up day and night since April.
My friend had a wedding this weekend, but will be here after work every day this week, and vows if he has to work day and night this coming weekend, he will find it. This guy graduated top of his class from Wyoming Tecnical Institute, and between working with him five days a week, hanging out with him in his garage after work, I've seen him fix everything thrown at him. He's now taking it personally because he did the initial rewire, so I'm lucky in that respect.
Chris, Bro, you KNOW I wish you a speedy remedy and a trouble free trip to BG, maybe next year for me, right now, I just wanna go around the block with no fear.

Better words were never spoken. ;)

Maybe if we all chanted... Yeah! That's it, we can organize a time when we all think positive thoughts for each other and chant something like "No More Glitches! No More Glitches! No More Glitches!" :L

AMEN

I'm so tired of being disappointed thinking for sure we found it and then having it quit on me, I looked on the internet for "Sell Your Soul.Com" and was ready to bargain but even HE won't acknowledge me!!!

Lou,
I know you aren't asking for advice but you're getting it anyway. :L Your problem sounds just like the reason that many street rodders carry a complete points ignition with them on long trips as a backup. It sounds like you are having a hard time deciding if it is the new wiring or the MSD. Put in a points distributor, coil and resistor and go from there. If that cures it then you know the MSD is the problem.

Thanks Tom

I have a Mallory distributor which when I bought the car had a dual point set up. I changed it over to unilite about a month later. Then when I pulled the engine and did the build, partially because of the 12:5 to one and the 64CC heads, I went with the MSD in order to be able to run pump gas. All of that worked out fine, with the exception of this losing spark problem. I believe my friend has located another 6AL box that we know works, so one night after work this week, we're going to switch it with mine.

I certainly appreciate any input from all of my CAC people as I know there's a vast amount of knowledge in here. ;)

Rowdy

Is the ACTUAL ignition switch NEW or did you use the orig switch?

I haven't read ALL your pain posts.... so if you have answered this already... sorry.

I'm here Bro.... share your pain!

Vig!

New

The actual ignition switch is brand new from a vette specialty place in NY, not a rebuilt but a replacement switch.

I hope to have it running (CORRECTLY!)by the end of the week. :J

I wish you the best with your harness, hopefully it will take care of your problems. Nice engine picture. ;)

Ya know, a while back I posted the distorted picture of my Vette, thinking that I might do something like that on the trailer. Well, I'm glad I didn't run right out and have that done after seeing the new avatars we have now. My mural would be nothing special now. :(

_ken ;)

Don't ask how the engine project is going. I'll be sure to fill in all the blanks when I finally DO get it sorted out. :eyerole

Sure it would Ken. It's a rear view and it's your car. Not just any Corvette.

BTW I have a rear view picture of my '59 in '71 with it's Mickey Thompson whitewall cheater slicks. I should scan it so you could do the same to it. Might be cool.

Tom

Are they trying to tell me something?

There's just no way around it -- if you want it, you're going to have to work for it. There is no rest for the weary. It isn't all bad, though. As the hard work continues, you can begin to see where this is heading. A project will stand as a testimony to your skills -- once you've done all that's required.

Like everything else that is valuable, it's worth the wait.

I certainly hope so! :eyerole

Did they find the coolant leak yet?

Does it leak on the ground, or does it leak into the oil?

What are you down to for getting it finished?

Two days left in CA?

Good luck man!

I'm still in the dark about it. The coolant leak hasn't even been looked at yet, but it is not leaking into the oil, just barely seeping from somewhere on the block.

As I've stated already, it'll be there come hell or high water. We might just drag it down your way after and you can set it right for me. ;)

Two days? Tell me about it! :mad
