Leaking fuel filter

Has anyone else had a problem with replacement fuel filters leaking on an LT1? I changed the filter on my '93 yesterday. The old one was fine, no leaks, not clogged, just time for a new one. The replacement looks identical to the original. There aren't any o-rings or gaskets on either the new or old filter, and my service manual says there aren't supposed to be. The new filter went on fine, but when I turned the ignition on and fired up the fuel pump gas started streaming out of the connection to the outlet of the filter (the motor side). I figured I must have cross-threaded it or something, but it was on there fine. I pulled the new one off and put the old one back on and no leak. I even went back to the store and bought another brand of fuel filter with the same results. I've swapped it out half a dozen times now, the new ones always gush gas and the old one is fine. And I mean gushing, nothing that tape or sealer has any prayer of stopping. Anyone have any ideas or am I just going crazy? On the plus side I'm getting really good at swapping fuel filters.

It sounds to me as if you might have the wrong replacement number.

Have you tried duct tape?

LP city? Man I haven't been there in years. Graduated from Great Mills High. Last time I was there things had really boomed. Guess with NADC moving down they had to expand the place a bit.

One thought on your problem ... are you sure you are getting the fittings tight? If they thread on it would seem that you have the correct part.

Had a similar issue a couple of years ago on my 92. The dealer replaced the fuel filter while doing some other work. I started noticing a fuel odor a couple of days later in the garage and could not find it at first. Should have checked the fuel filter right away and I did but the initial leak was so slow that it dried before you could see it. Btw, my leak was on the motor side of the filter also.

Anyway, with in the week, it was leaving a small puddle under the car. The dealer had to replace the filter with a new one. They flatbedded the car back to the shop because I was afraid to drive it 20 miles to them. The service manager said that an 'o' ring had been pinched on the first install. I'm not sure if they have o-rings or not, but it seems easy enough to generate a leak at the filter during a change. I'm not sure what the dealer did other than install a new filter. Maybe they put a sealer on it!

Second time worked great.

Welcome to the CAC! Sorry that your replacement filter is leaking. I put one on my vette about 3000 miles or so, and no problems yet.

They do have o-rings, most likely yours are stuck in the original filter. I have a hard time believing that every make of aftermarket filter would leak while your original one wouldn't. GM fuel o-rings are color coded brown, in the event you decide to replace them (good idea).

Use teflon tape. I had that problem with my convertible so I had extra fun with the "X" frame. Good Luck

They absolutely do have o-rings. I have a 93 and they are very small and fine. My instructions told me to be very careful with them or replace them. I was careful and fortunate. AdvancedAutoCC is on the money!
