Is this true? Over on a Corvair forum they were saying that any exhaust that went beyond stock would be toast?

Borla? Magnaflow? This sounds like real trouble because if they do it in ME and get away with it NY, CT and NJ will likely follow?

:confused:ugh;squint:

Now, now...that's your government looking out for your interests. What's a few horsepower in the interests of quiet?

:chuckle

I'm from Maine but that's news to me. I'm running Z06 exhaust so I should be good to go. Even though it's not stock to my car, it is a GM product.

Do you know if this includes cats and headers? If so, then I'm in trouble.

armycopter, first off, Welcome to CAC. I did a search and here's what I have found.

SEMA Michigan Exhaust Bill - Mustang & Fords Magazine

It appears to me that there is some sort of ban, but that it follows SEMA's recommendations from SAE testing.

...SEMA model legislation that provides for the testing of vehicle exhaust noise to a standard adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) with an established noise limit of 95-decibels (SAE J1169). Under the SAE standard, a sound meter is placed 20 inches from the exhaust outlet at a 45 degree angle and the engine is revved to three quarters of maximum rated horsepower. The highest decibel reading is then recorded.

To date, with the popular support of vehicle enthusiasts and related businesses, the model has been enacted in California, Washington State and Maine.

What's been happening for about the last 30 years is various states have tried to pass outright bans on exhaust system modifications. In a few places this has been sucessful or partially so. For example in California, on vehicles built after 1974 headers are illegal unless they have a CARB EO number. Now...this law is widely ignored, but occasionally one hears of cases were it's enforced both with the car owner being proscecuted for emissions controls "tampering" and the owner being forced to remove the parts.

Typically this is liberals, environmentalists and just general car noise haters who put pressure on State legislatures to pass this kind of law.

On one hand I almost can sympathize. For example there some sport compact ******* that lives near me who runs not just aftermarket but open exhaust on the street. Even I'll admit the car is really loud I actualliy can hear the car coming a quarter-mile away. It's people like that who draw the most attention from liberal legislators who hate cars. But...I digress.

In the past, SEMA and others have tried to defeat these bills, but what's happening is as the country becomes more liberal and the anti-car/anti-oil trend spreads, SEMA and others have realized that, in some parts of the country, defeating these bills has become a loosing battle.

What SEMA did was come up with a compromise idea they've been presenting in States trying to enact outright prohibitions on exhaust system modifications which replaces a complete ban with a requirement that any modified exhaust system must meet an SAE standard as far as noise. I don't know the specifics of this standard but I'm sure one can find info about it on SEMA's web site.

So, in summary, what you'd get in States were there's a good possibility of bans being passed is a compromise were you could still modify an exhaust but to do it, you'd have to use parts which meet this SAE standard.

How can people prevent even that?

Organize, network and vote.

No problem.....just stay out of Maine.:L After awhile the retailers and hotel owners will get the law repealed.

Static about Noise

Lotsa loud cars out there, no surprise about reactions. Remember to include the loud-pipe Harleys out there also, they'll be included in reactions to reactions. (ya like those stickers that read "Loud Pipes Save Lives"?)

We (everyone) wouldn't be concerned about drilling politicos about stuff that actually MATTERS, such as the increased death rates due to cell phone/texting/internet play while driving, would we? They seem so hot about seat belt use and drunk driving - it's an established fact that the cell phone problem is right up there, if not worse, than drunk driving. :mad:mad

And they are passing laws and establishing bans in those areas too. Typically, when people are not responsible or have no regard for their fellow neighbor, the government gets involved.

As a native Mainer I'll chime in here.First Maine has had a vehicle inspection law since the 50's and it hasn't changed much. It's always been and still is that you can get pinched for excess noise.

Now the only thing that is being in-forced a little more is the bikes with straight pipes and those with radical exhaust .Motor cycles are required to have a yearly inspection which in the past never gotten enforced that much.

Now as far as Tourists staying out of Maine ,please do us a favor. It has fundamentally ruined the state .People from AWAY have come to visit and stayed .They are over baring and arrogant .Our young people can either move out or become white slave labor at minimum labor jobs .

Most of the noise complains are from tourists and people from AWAY.

Quite a while ago Maine actually required vehicle inspections every 6 months!

Remo: Mass has been working very hard to do the same. Mass also been working hard to force owners to crush any unregistered cars in people's yards to stop "rust polution"!!! What a joke... but it's for real!

Mass is a fun state with alot to do.

lol ;LOL

Where in Maine are you from?
Caribou,Eastport and Bowdoin I spend most nights in the "Ford Motel".

I'm old enough to remember Maine as a good place to work and raise a family .That was 30yrs ago.:mad And before some over educated idiot called tourism an "Industry"

In today's world, anything that generates money is considered an industry. Bike Week and other seasonal gatherings bring the loud vehicles to Florida every year. I don't see Bike Week lasting too much longer. Daytona is tired of the price to do business with the annual "issues".

I live in central Florida and I hardly, if ever, go to or near any of the tourist spots. There really is no need.

As I get older, I have less tolerance for the heat and humidity. I can't stand it anymore. I am ready to move to a more moderate climate at all costs. Florida blows. I can say that because I have lived here for 40 years.

I don't believe anything I read on the internet.;LOL

Maine law is true

They recently passed a law that bans loud exhausts.

I "Googled" this and there was a letter from the Maine State Police Traffic folks posted.

In essence, the law is out to get those folks who have an insanely loud exhaust. What the Lt. said in the letter was that if you don't attract our attention don't worry. It does not, as some of the internet chatter indicated ban all aftermarket exhausts.

Heck in Maine it is not uncommon on the state highways to see Yahaha AWD's or snowmobiles.

Quite frankly, I am glad. Flame away! :r

I had to sell my last house and about 25% of the reason were not Borla but the f'ing Harley for Lunch Bunch.

I lived in a scenic area and it was a "destination spot" on weekends. Saturday and Sunday, you had to close the windows because every "Hawg" with open pipes would drag up the hill in like second gear.

I have had a couple of Harley D's and Rolling Thunder is cool but even now these "Runs To Nowhere" are a weekend PITA and I live a full block off the main road.

Balls? The "clubs" are getting brass balls and are now stopping traffic with road guards. They now try to stop you as they run STOP signs. I am a vet, I am the first to stop and respect Rolling Thunder but, sorry, your lunch run does not count and I will and do roll through your illegal road guards while you run stop signs. :mad

I had a Borla on my Corvette and loved it and drove it through Maine many times.

Oh please!! this is hardly news. Maine born and raised and driven hot rods since I was 16. Had to take off more than one "cherry bomb" to get past the annual inspection. Even collected a ticket back in my teen years requiring my exhaust be returned to stock within 48 hours.

Vette Boy, if someone doesn't bring some money into Maine pretty soon the whole place may be up for sale at auction. I've been in Kentucky nearly 8 years and return to Maine about every year. Taxes are higher than ever and the roads are in horrible shape. With some of the lowest wages and the highest taxes in the country there's not much brag about.

Your correct it's not new news and chances are that you put your cherry bombs back on six months down the road .

Maine was ranked by Forbes last month as the most unfriendly business state.Washington county if the poorest county east of the Mississippi. It's socialism at it's best .

You we're smart to move .

Yeah right! Why don't you come over here and show us how that's done without getting yourself in the slammer. Make sure you let them know your from Joysee. :rotfl
