need cat and exhaust advice on 87

They are aluminized steel which won't last as long as stainless, but should still last a long time.
I believe they are 2 1/2" dia. which isn't large but as a dual exhaust system still provides slightly more cross sectional area than a single 3" pipe. Plus your losing the flow restriction of the cats (check emission control testing in your area).
IMO, for the money they seem like a pretty good deal and if your handy you could install them yourself and have a nice flowing system for minimal investment.

thanks for the input. I plan on keeping the car for a very long time so i will start looking for stainless/ but you recommend the 3" ?

In my opinion, a 3" exhaust setup is too big for a stock 350 TPI. You won't lose power but the power will be shifted upwards in the curve a little more.

As for stainless vs. aluminized, try to go stainless like Zum said. It does cost more but the longevity and looks of stainless are very good. At least you don't have to worry about snow and the salting that comes along with it.

I ended up not going that way because:

1)I would have needed oval pipes to tuck under the car ($$$)
2)It would have been too loud! (it's cool at first but try it for an hour or two)
3)consensus was it would have hurt low-end torque on an unmodified motor

My bad. I meant to say 2 1/4" dia. Which I still think is a good setup/size for stock or nearly stock L98.
 
Does anyone make a stainless exhaust system for my '88 L98 or would I need to go to a professional installer to have one fabricated? What are the costs for either one?

Borla makes a stainless exhaust system. Last I checked: $500 for a pair of mufflers and $200 for a rear y-pipe.

If you mean a replacement exhaust Mid America does:

If you are looking for a stainless cat back system, check the catalogs but be prepared to spend around $1000

Thanks Edmond. I kinda had a brain slip there. I know there are several stainless systems available. Personally, of the ones out there I like the look of the magnaflows the best. (IMHO)

But still, with my budget restrictions I can't hardly resist the Corvette central system. $400 (not including shipping) for all new system from the mainifolds to the exhaust tips. If a car isn't drive much (or at all) in the snow and salt it should have a pretty good life span. One could even paint the system before installation to give an extra protective coating.

1. agreed- too much money but i think even dual 3" can fit with no problems

2. loud pipes saves lives :gap

3. i pulled 350 rwtq with only a handful of mods with gutted cat and dumps at the rear Y pipe after long tube header install so i doubt i'm losing any torque. this is why race cars run straight headers. if you can get it in just as fast as you get it out your not losing anything at all especially if you use stepped headers but thats a different discussion ;)

i was thinking about going with the MAD setup as previously listed but now i see it's only in 2 1/4" so i will have to rethink about what i want to do. -=Jeff=- told me i can go with a LT1 exhaust setup which is true duals so i will also look into that and check the diameter. only reason i am shying away from 2 1/4" duals is because the collectors on my TPiS long tubes are 3".

I think I like that stainless system even better than the Corvette central system except no H pipe. I suppose I could have that or an X pipe cut in. The price on that mid-america system seems very reasonable.
