I am getting ready to start on my new engine for my vette. I wonder if this combo will make my goal of 440hp @ the crank?

400 sb .030 (406)
Scat 9000 series crank
Scat rods
Probe forged pistons (9.8 w/ 64cc)
Performer rpm heads (64cc)
Gm hyd roller cam 218/ 228 .525/.525 112 (lt4 hot cam)
Performer intake (want to run an air-gap but want to keep the stock hood)
Jet stage II Q-jet (already have on present motor)

I'm looking to build a high torque motor . (5500- 6000 max rpm)
Any comments or suggestions as to if this looks like a good combination?

that combo will produce big torque numbers down low, but the cam is too small for a 400. bigger motors like bigger duration cams. with the combo your looking at, it will run out of air and fall on its face at 4800-5000rpm. if you want a little more rev, look for 234-236 duration. Weiand intakes are nice, they flow a little better than Edelbrocks. what size heads you planning?? i would say some 195's would suffice your needs, but 210's would also work. i have a bunch of different combos of 400's, and a couple with dyno numbers. if your interested, email me and i'll be glad to share what i know about 400's. I don't think you're going to keep the stock hood with an air-gap, a standard Performer intake is about as much as you're likely to be able to fit, and even then you will need a drop base (LT-1) style air cleaner bottom plate.

There's just not much room under the stock small block hoods for a better intake setup :(

You will need extra hood clearance to get an intake setup that will feed that big mouse of yours properly.

As to the cam suggestions, get the flow numbers for your heads and call up the cam mfg. tech lines for recommendations. The cam you should get will depend on gear ratio, auto or manual, stall converter (if auto), power or manual brakes and intended driving usage (streetrod vs drags or AX or whatever).

I would suggest Ross, JE or Wiseco pistons, unless you have had good experience with Probe (who I have not heard of before).

1.1HP per cube is entirely possible with just a bit of extra attention to the details.

I realize that this motor is going to be somewhat of a compromise. Can't run a real good intake because of hood clearance & I want to keep the car stock appearing. I am taking Akray4play's advice & going to run more duration on the cam. But I want to build it for alot of low - midrange torque since it is an auto car with a 3.08 gear which i really don't want to change. Ive got a chevy highperformance mag. that tested a 406 with 9.5-1 comp. with vortec heads & a 230 deg Lunati cam & it made 427hp @5000 & a whopping 525ft/lb @ 3600 rpm. so basicly this is what I am looking to duplicate. I will be running performer Rpm heads which flow about the same as my present vortecs on the intake side & a little better on the exhaust side. I realize that they are alittle on the small side for a 406 but they were a good deal & could'nt pass them up.
