even after I had the recall done :( . Someone told me to put the bypass on it well doesnt that make it easier to steal the car? Im just trying to figure out how to stop that crazy s#$% from happening again but I dont want to come out and find my car gone .:mad does the bypass make it that the wheel doesnt lock anymore? you can turn it when the keys out right? because the last time it locked they had to bring a flat bed to my house to get the car out of here and had a problem getting it up cause the front wheels where locked I was freakin out watching them do that ... just wondering anyone put the bypass on have any troubles with it yet?

bypass

After I had my Chevy dealer fix my column I never had it happen again after two and half years. Good luck C5 Chick.

yeah

I had mine done a yr ago no problems what so ever... then over the weekend I went out and it came up on dash "STEERING COLUMN LOCKED" I was like SHINT!!!! so i walked away from car saying a few words under my breath lol went back out and it unlocked. I had my little brother look into it for me he said he heard where they locked on people WHILE driving. anyone heard of this that would be scary exspecially doing over 100. ouch

Hi there,
There has NEVER been one documented proven case of the column locking while driving down the road. NHSTA investigated the matter vigorously when column locking issues first began, and found that of 184 claimed cases of supposed column locking while driving, every one was when people were attempting to either drive out or back out of a parking space, and the car shut down. This is in line with programming, which will shut the vehicle down when you hit 3 mph, even if there is only a feedback circuit failure, not an actual failure of the locking mechanism.
Of over 200 column lock repairs that I have done, only one has returned, due to a bad relay, nothing more.
So, with that said, if GM repair guidelines are followed, 99% of the time, your car will be fixed, the first time.
If there are further questions, please do NOT hesitate to ask.

Hello guys and gals :)

Well the steering wheel locked on me while driving! I was not going fast but was at about 33-45 mph. The engine shut down and I drove straight into a clearing where the car was taken to the dealrship. It costed me $525 to fix and have had no problems, but it has happended while driving FYI.

Hello Silver,
Then I would recommend that with the proof in hand, please contact your department of motor vehicles, in Mexico.
I am sure that you have some recourse of your occurance.

Happened to me

I had my column lock up on Monday. Got it to unlock and drove it to the dealer. They made repairs on Tuesday. Today, car was fine in the morning, but after work, got the steering column locked message and it was locked agaisn. After fussing with it, got it unlocked it again and drove it straight to the dealer. It is there now. I will talk to them in the morning to get this resolved.

Keep us posted on the progress of this and welcome to the Corvette Action Center.

Ask them to give you a repair invoice. It should say that they replaced the Relay, Wiring Harness, Lock Plate and Steering Nut.

Just had mine done. I am done worrying about it as per c4c5specialist.

Is this steering lock problem associated with all C5's or just through 2001?

Same question...as I'm about to purchase a '99 FRC.
Also, is there a service bulletin available and if the car has already been fixed, how do I know?

After reading about all the column lock problems, I have had nagging doubts about the safety of the C5. Well, now we know that column lock can even occur when the car is moving at significant speeds. Makes you not want to trust our C5s, doesn't it? Because I don't trust the GM "fix", I installed the Column Lock Bypass, and no problems so far.

Questions: Has anyone experienced column lock after installing the bypass? If so, when at rest or when moving?

I had my steering column lock up in BG during the Labor Day celebration. I ordered a bypass had it installed & I haven't had a problem since. :beer

Well if yours locked up while moving 35mph I hope you are one that contacted the NHTSA & you sued GM for the collision damage to your Vette since the accident happened because of the locked steering column. Mine locked up backing out of the garage & mine was not in the vin range since mine had the latest update from the factory since it is a 2001 made last week of production. My dealer replaced the parts with the same new ones since mine was the latest part #'s. Even if the computer shuts the engine down after 3mph what if you are moving on the highway & it locks up. Also think about GM has no confidence in the fix because if they had they would have applied it to the auto trans instead of disabling it. They can't do it to our M6 because the feds say either the trans or steering must lock.

I can say for sure that the steering column can be in the locked position and you can drive forward three feet before the engine turns off. The D.I.C. displays "wait 10 seconds before starting the engine again" or something very close to that. After starting the car again I got the "service the steering column lock" indication. This happened to me last night. :(

I'm confused :confused ... according to the GM TSB this problem and recall is only applicable to 1998-2000 cars. Yet I see mention here of 2001 cars... do I need to be concerned? (2001 Z06)

Thanks,

Michael :w

Be concerned. I have a 2001 Coupe & it has locked up. Supposedly had the latest fix from the factory as it was made 1 week before the 2002 run started. I have read that 2002's are locking up. Think about this GM's fix for all A4's is to disable the lock, if the fix for the M6's were reliable would they not have applied it to the A4's in service.

According to my dealer the 2000 was not part of the recall. GM must not have had enough problems to justify a recall for 2000 and up. The fix however is exactly the same as the recalled years.

Contact the service manager at your local dealer for a print-out of any recall service on your c-5 vin#. If you want the recall service and your vin # is not on the service bulletin you can call Chev. customer service and request it. I did and they scheduled the service with my local dealer. Note i did not say i had a problem with the C.L. but i let them know i was concerned my car's vin # was not on their bulletin.
