I was just looking around a specs page for 78 Vettes and of course, like any Vette, there are many options. We just got the Vette yesterday, and I'm real excited to find out what is in her, specifically. I mean, of course I know the general stuff. But what about the detailed information?

For instance, I was just at the 1978 Corvette Registry page and I see something like this as far as carbs go:

Carburator:
Rochester Q-jets #'s:
17058202=350,185,at
203=350,185,mt
204=350,185,at,ac,fd
206=350,185,at,ac,sd
210=350,220,at
211=350,220,mt
228=350,220,at,ac
502=350,175,at,ce
504=350,175,at,ac,ce
582=350,175,at,ha
584=350,175,at,ac,ha

How do I know which carb is in my Vette?

I'm not sure I'm correct about this, but does the VIN tell me a lot of information about my Vette? I guess I never understand the true meaning of the VIN. I always just figured that it was a way to make sure of matching numbers, but is that all? Or does it tell me the specifics that I'm looking for.

If the VIN doesn't tell me these specifics, where can I find them?

Thanks! :D

TR - Go to the NCRS site ( www.ncrs.org ) and click on the "On-Line Store", and order the "1968-1982 Corvette Specifications Guide" (about ten bucks); it will tell you EVERYTHING about your car, has FAR more information than any website does, and the information is dead accurate. If you really want to know in super detail exactly what every part in the car was when it was built, and how everything is supposed to operate, also order the "1978-1979 Corvette Technical Manual & Judging Guide" (about 30 bucks). While you're at it, you can join the NCRS (on-line), and get the contact information for your local chapter - where the cars, people, activities, events, and knowledge is to really help you learn about your car.

John, I think I'm going to do this. Sounds like a great idea. Naturally, I want to learn everything about my specific Vette and I'm willing to take any and all measures to do this, if it requires me buying a couple of books on technicals. Do you think that I will be able to understand that technical book you mentioned second? I'm smart and if there's something I don't understand I know that you guys will be more than willing to answer my questions. ;)

Thanks! :D

And I will check that number on my carb. I would like to know specifically about the carb, too. Some specifications, like CFMs and other stuff about it, too. Thanks! :)

Another great source of useable information is the Corvette Black Book. For its low price you can't beat it. I highly recommend one for the serious Corvette owner. (no I don't work for them)

TR, basically all QJets are 750 cfm. What's primarily different between model numbers are the metering rods and jets.

If you REALLY want to learn about carbs, get a copy of Doug Roe's book, Rochester Carburetors.

I got this book 3 months ago for my '78 S/A. It is GREAT!!! If you want to know how your car came from the factory this is it. It covers the whole car with part numbers and more important date codes. I never saw the Black Book, it may be just as good. It costs $20.00 @ Amazon.

I got this book for Christmas. It is a great resource advising of the myths, problem areas, etc. that you run into when working on your car.

About that restoration book, how in-depth does it go? Because I have How To Restore and Modify Your Corvette 1968 - 1982 By Richard Newton and it's not as technical about my Vette as I would like. What about this one you recommend?

Thanks! :D

What are you trying to do...fix it or restore it. If you want to know what is factory on your car then you get "Corvette Restoration Guide 1968-1982 (Authentic Restoration Guides) by Richard Prince". It will give a starting point of where you're at now. If you want to repair it, then get the service manual. The book you have is a little of both. These two are better.

John, I'm looking for these titles that you name, but I can't find them specifically. http://www.ncrs.org/store/shop.cgi/SID=1044413630.219/page=results.html This is where I'm looking.

But I see this one...
1978 Corvette Owners Manual Retail

And I see that 2nd title you mentioned. Thanks! :D

TR - If you don't see the '68-'82 Specifications Guide on the site, just call them at (513) 385-8526 and order it - tell Eric John Hinckley sent you.

TR - The Specifications Guide that John is referring to is listed near the bottom of the page at this link as NCRS Pocket Spec Guides. It's just above the Corvette Black Book.
