Possible Complete loss of my Corvette...

Thanks for the reply evolution80. I guess it kind of could sound like a stall tactic, but it isn't. They offered to put on a spare and align it that way, but we both agreed and said it would be better to get the wheel first, seeing how it was supposedly an easy thing to do. If it takes much longer I will definatly change my tactics, but I just wanted to inform everyone what was going on, and to see if anyone knew where I could get a wheel from. If I can't find a wheel by next week, then I will go down there and tell them to start the body work, and/or align it with just the spare. By the way, would aligning it with a spare on be any different then with a normal wheel?

Thumper that's genius!!! So simple but so logical! I will definatly pitch this idea if nothing else comes up.

Center posts & spinners

Tatortot,
PM me your shipping address. I'll send you my old spinner posts and two usable center caps. It's on me.

For getting the replacement set of posts/spinners, the Summit part number when I bought 'em back in July '02 was GOR-73515. At the time, the set of 4 was $31.39. I bought the cap emblems from either Corvette Central or Ecklers. Right now the two spinner I'll send have "Cragar" black emblems.

You got a message evolution80!!! Thanks soooooo much for the hospitality and donation!

FedEx will have your package tonight. You should have it possibly by Friday, or next Tuesday at the latest.

Any luck with the rim and/or alignment issues?

Thanks for all your help Evolution80, I owe you big time. I talked again with the shop and we are not going to paint the entire body right now, just the rear quarter panel and door like the insurance company allows for. To tell you the truth they wanted $5,000 on top of the already $1,981 we were giving them, which seems a bit much to me. They said they would throw in a free buffing though to try and get everything looking nice, but I don't know how much that will do for the giant finishless spots I have throughout the paint. As for the wheels: Ebay has been my only help, yet it has also been a major problem. I bid and won on that single wheel I showed everyone, but the owner never responded on the size, or the shipping information, until just today. Regardless of which we have a contract and I'm not about to squirm out of it, and the total with shipping is only like $46. I would still like to get out of it because I bid on an entire set of wheels on another ebay auction because this guy simply didn't answer my inquiries. The auction ends in 20 hours, and I'm still the current highest bidder. It includes 4 almost new wheels, spacers, lug nuts and all hardware and is only up to $455. Here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2466578910&category=43955

Thanks again for everyones help, I'll keep everyone posted.

Those are nice looking wheels. I had some like them on my 78 and they looked great. I'm getting another 78 the end of the month and as soon as I have the money I'm going to be looking for another set to go on it. The got the set I had on Ebay and was VERY happy with the wheels. I'm just sorry I had to sell the vette with the wheels on it.

As to the E bay deal; If the seller didn't get ahold of you within 3 days of the end you may be able to refuse to go throw with it. Good luck and if you end up with two sets of the wheels and want to sell one set let me know; Maybe I'll have some money by then.

So you'll have a working spare then. A piece of mind that only set ya back $50 or so. Just think how handy it would be to have it now...??? Never know when ya might need a working spare, as I would say that most of us C3'ers probably rarely ever (if ever!) check our spare, or simply drive without it! (I go without.)

Yeah it would be great to have a spare set, even if they aren't as good looking as the "new" pair. Driving on an undersized spare is difficult, or at least it is for me to, so knowing I can have 4 extra wheels (and for the price of tires only being $75) it gives me a piece of mind knowing I don't ever have to drive on a spare. If the tire is 15X8 then it would only help having it. Copdog, I'll keep you in mind if I ever want to part with them, or a spare set, but it doesn't look good, those wheels are fantastic looking aren't they?

I've gone from not getting any wheels to too many now. I just got an email from summit saying that they shipped the wheel... I already canceled the wheel order... so now I got 6 wheels coming in when I need 1... I know I can return the summit one (minus shipping) but yeesh this is too much!!

Just refuse shipment on the Summit wheel when it arrives. Keep your documentation from when you canceled the order and get a refund from the Credit Card Company. Not many people are going to fault you for dealing hard with Summit.:(
AFTER you get the Vette repaired you can always sell the extra bits on eBay or you can follow my example and add extensions to your garage every year. I still have parts from a project I sold in 1985. You can never have enough old car parts on hand. Maybe in 15 years time you will be the experienced guy helping out the young fellow.:w

Well I won the 4 wheels on ebay for $455, not too bad for a set of new wheels. I'm obviously sending the summit wheel back (or refusing shipment delivery), and I don't know about the other, rusty wheel yet, the guy is terrible in checking his email, I'm going to just try and call it off. If I do get it and it is the wrong size I'll post here to see if anybody needs one or try to sell it back on ebay, hmm, maybe I'll make a coffee table out of it :L ?

As I said in the PM to ya...Don't mention it! :beer
As for the receipt, it was already in the box so I just left it there. If anything, you can see the correct part number (or as it was at the time) if you wanted to buy all new ones.

Just got a call from the shop. Summitt sent the single wheel to them, so they balanced it, mounted it and took it for a test drive; everything seems to work fine. Body and paint will be done on saturday so thats when I get to pick her up!! Saturday can't come soon enough.... now I'm just waiting for the new set of wheels to come in... what do you guys think I should do? Put the new ones on, or keep them in storage?

With all of the sand that the road crews laid down during all of the ice and snow around here, I'd at least store them until a couple of strong rain storms wash all of this crap off the roads. No sense inviting any sand swirls and dirt.

Congrats on what seems to have been a pretty smooth resurection.

Thanks 71shark! I guess the work did go pretty smoothly, it was my mind that was a mess. I wouldn't have had time to get the new wheels on till the middle of april anyways, so sounds like a good plan.

Just got back from the Corvette shop, without a Corvette though... I get there and the owner meets us, and everything looks great. The new wheel is on, the got the original spinner back on, they even took off the blue color off of the white lettering on the new tires (what is that stuff anyways?). The paint looks great so far, and she says to bring it back in 30-60 days for a final sanding/buffing so the paint has a chance to cure. So we pay, I pick up the old wheel and tire and throw them into my Olds Bravada, and I start my fire breathing dragon up... all seems okay. It rained earlier, so I turn on the wipers to wash the residual rain off... nothing happens.. I call the owner over and she says "we didn't even open up the engine bay, I dont know what the problem is, probebly just a fuse, bring it back on Monday and we'll take a look at it". Fine.. not toooo bad I guess.. then, while I have the hood up, I see smoke... and it smells like burnt oil, coming from the passanger side. Looks like the vavle covers; they have some oil caked on it and it looks like its dripping on the exhaust header. So anyways, they are going to change both valve cover gaskets, figure out the wiper problem (I think its the relay, it clicks sometimes..) and give me a call on Monday.. I was so close... it felt so good to be in the driver seat again. Just on a side note to brag... I had to back up the Olds on the loading ramp to pick up the old wheel and tire, and it was having real trouble getting up the incline... then I had to pull the vette back in the shop and man she just glided up there.. the torque is amazing... okay well thats it for now, I thought I'd just let everyone know whats going on and to brag a little.
