Hello all. Recently took a 600 mile trip in my 89. The oil temperature was ran a little hot to my liking with the A/C on......got up to 240-250. Coolant stayed below 220 at all times. Now this is AZ so it was hot outside and I was driving pretty fast...between 90 and 110 on two long stretches.

I am going to change the oil but was wondering what is the proper oil temps for normal and highway driving conditions?

Thanks!!!!

When you change your oil, how about letting us know what the old stuff looks like when it comes out.

That seems to be a tad on the warm side but not something I'd worry too awfully much about.

Thanks. I will see how it looks. I checked the oil yesterday and it wasn't black. Oh I forgot the SES code light would come on after running over 245 oil temp for a while....it will not come on when oil temp is lower.

Have you cleaned the leaves & papers out between the A/C & the radiator lately? Also check the timing. Should be 6 deg.

What? That's all? :L

We just drove to the Grand Canyon for the weekend; caught the only day of snow and limited visibility! :eyerole Seems the traffic on the I'state was doing 90.

Those oil temperatures seem about right for those conditions, with a stock car. The cleaning recommendation is always good, especially before the AZ summer.

Also ensure that your front spoiler is intact, as it is essential to proper cooling air.

What oil are you running? If it's a good synthetic it's good to about 300 degrees, I belikeve. I didn't un over 230 at sustained speeds over 120 in over 95 degrees, but I have an oil cooler.

Sounds a little high, but nothing to be overly worried about. It could even be an inacurate readout.

I had been using Castrol 5/30 Just switched over to Mobil 1 synthetic. Took car out for nice long run and temp says about the same. I am not going to worry too much about it. I am going to pull the radiator and clean it today so maybe that will help cool motor a little perhaps. Newton's book says the motor is designed to run a little hot so I will have to go with that for now. Thanks for all input!

I took the radiator out and found a good amount of crud in the housing. I cleaned it and cut 3 semi-rectangular holes with a dremel tool in the bottom of the casing. Hopefully this will help with keeping it clean and air flow!
