Mass Backing is the same backing they used from the factory its thick and provides a better sound and heat bearer. think of it kinda like padding that goes under the carpet in ure home u can buy cheap padding and it'll feel like u r walking on cement or u can buy the better padding and its enjoyable to walk on hope this helped

The plastic backing is only a few dollars cheaper, SO I went for the Mass backing.

but Also I added the (silverfoil) thing which Mid America provides for heat resitance on the tranny tunnel.

I have an stainless steel exhaust system and lots of resonance from the mufflers
thats a nice sound but not for long trips.

Thanks everyone, I figured it was some sort of underlay. Seeing as how my carpet is rather old, it would be best to the mass backing aswell. Thanks again!

I recently replaced my carpets, and used mass backing. One additional advantage is that I think it might fit better as it more closely duplicates the original. If you don't mind cutting out holes for the rear speakers and the device which holds the top down when you store it in the back of the car, I can recommend the carpeting that Mid America sells. It comes in two large boxes (this helps avoid creases) and includes instructions.

I bought my set from Willcox $389

my set came in 1 big (back injury) box :ugh

mass backed , producer : American Custom Carpets.
Holes for the speakers in the back compatment are pre-cut.

the only thing I think is crap, that the drivers side heel rest
factory it has punched CORVETTE and on the reproduction it isnt.
I have the graphite carpet with grey heel and foot insert. and on the reproduction they are black.

Is this too with the mid america, ecklers etc ???

My Mid America set didn't have a heel pad (only a footrest pad). I think that was an error by the manufacturer (I am checking--didn't realize this until the carpets were in!), but a set of mats eliminates the problem for now, and I have figured out how to put in a pad. Otherwise, they were perfect in just about every way. I will let you know what I find out.

I got my carpet from Wilcox as well. Whenever I leave my car parked in the sun, the rear carpet deforms from the heat, while the stock carpet never did that. I know, I know, "don't park in the sun", but that's difficult to do in Honolulu.
