Removing the steering valve

I'm looking for a procedure to remove the power steering valve (1978 L48) from the relay and tie rod assembly. I have already removed the nut and the clamp screw from the valve. Question, does the pitman arm have to be removed from the steering box? Or, should I disassemble the tie rods to free the relay rod?

You can use a pickle fork to separate the CV from the pitman arm but you'll probably wreck the boot. You're better off using a puller that fits to pop it off. Once the pitman arm is free of the valve you should be able to unscrew it off the center link after removing the pinch bolt.

I just did this job. Go to Autozone and borrow a puller that is 3 inches in length on both sides (arms). Turn your front wheels all the way to the left. This will allow you to have "some" room to be able to fit the puller onto the top of the steering valve. Mine popped right off.
Others will tell you that a pickle fork is hard on your steering box.
