for reasons i dont want to get into, i am replacing my entire gen iv 454 with a crate engine.
spec sheet says
it is coming with the comp cams xr276hr. hydrolic roller and moly rings.

do i need to do anything special for break in like with a flat tappet or can i fill it up with standard SL rated oil and drive off.

i am pretty sure that i read somewhere that roller cams do not need high zddp but i wanted to verify.

Roller cams are not affected by problems created by low levels of ZDP in API SM ad SL engine oils.

When you install the lifters, make sure you prefill them. I fill a coffee can with engine oil, then dump the lifters in there over night. Also, it easier if you preset lifter preload at half a turn on all 16 valves before you start the engine.

awesome, thanks for the reply.

the shop that is going to install it said that they normally use the mobil 5000 5w30 to break in a roller cam engine. is there anything better/worse/indifferrent?

I would use a 5W30 for anything other than driving during winter in Alaska or Maine.

I'd use a 10W30, either synthetic or petroleum based. My guess is your "shop" like Mobil 5000 for the first fire-up because they think a petro-based oil is good for quick ring seating. No harm in that.

Roller cam brake in

Hey baxsom! See that you are going in another direction. Did you end up ordering heads and parts for your old setup, or just say the hell with it. Very sorry to hear about your dilema with the hired help you had working around your house. I hope you ended up getting some money out of that bullshit.

well basically,

i originally went with heads, cam, etc etc for the old block.
install went great in the garage. it fired on the second spin for break in, nice and smooth running. as soon as it fired i ran it up to 2500 rpms and zip tied the throttle open and started the clock.
i set my timing and then started looking for leaks. i noticed a leak coming from the front timing cover. so i shut it down.

since i am leaving for korea in a few weeks for a year tour i decided (and this was a big mistake) to have the car trailered to a shop to get the leak fixed. turned out that happened was the front of the oil pan seal moved when i tightened it down. they fixed that. so far so good.

i asked them to go ahead and finish breaking it in. no problem. high rpm 20 mins, no leaks no overheating, nice and smooth.

i asked them that since they have the car and since the break in run is over to finish the valve train and put the inner springs in.
long story short
they overtightend the valves. i made the mistake of not double checking the mechanics work and driving the car. one valve was so tight it sheared out of the keeper and went through the top of my piston and got stuck in my new edelbrock head at a 45 degree angle. others were so tight that the outline of the bottom of the rocker arm is on the top of the spring retainer.

i bumped the engine to #1 TDC and loosened the valve. it took 4 turns to get the pushrod where it would even move.

this particular shop said that since i drove it off that it must have been something I done to cause the problem so they were not liable.

so i looked around and talked to a few different shops and found one that not only had a garage of old vettes and camaros being worked on but they let me go in and take a look at the work that they were doing.

i cold probably save the heads and sell them but considering that one valve guide is screwed and many of the rocker studs are bent more than likely they are just big paperweights.

see long story but at least i get good performance turn key motor with not only a 3 year 100K mile warranty but enough hp to keep me happy for a while.

i talked to a lawyer and basically i would have to prove that they did something wrong and it wasnt me messing with something after i picked it up.

if the valve would have dropped while they were messing with it then i would have a case but since i drove it off the lot then i am screwed.

Well that just really sucks big time. You just can't get a break on this thing. What some incompotent jerks. If those heads ain't to bad, have them repaired and try to recoup a little of your money back. Sucks that now you'll wait another year to have it right. Take care of yourself over in Korea and check in every now and then to say hi or whatever.
