Slow starts

Does anyone have any good ideas on what could be causing slow or labored starting. My 85 has tendency to take long cranking cycle. Usually when I first go out in the mornings, the starter will turn for 3 or 4 seconds before the engine 'catches' and starts. Usually after I've driven for a while (10 mins), I can shut the car down, go in the store, and about 70% of the time it fires right up like a champ. However, the other 30% I'm starting for 3-4 secs, or having to let off the starter and try again.

Even when it starts relatively quickly, it sounds like the idle is sort of labored for the first 5 secs or so, but then, she purrs like a kitten.

Any ideas? I first thought it might be the starter, but that option went out the window when the starter failed. I replaced the starter and recently replaced the plugs and plug wires (all with no improvement to the starting problem). I replaced the air filter, which was only midly dirty, thinking that maybe it was choking for air...again no luck.

Any more shadetree mechanic ideas?

Thanks in advance. I've gotten more from this forum, than from all the "car-guys" I've ever known. I guess a community with little ego is better than someone standing in front of you nodding like an idiot.

Thanks again .

Fuel pressure, either filter, pump or both.

A leaking or otherwise bad injector will cause those symptoms. Maybe the cold start injector. Maybe it's not really a problem; I've experienced similar symptoms with mine depending on the weather, and this is sunny southern California! :L
