I bought my '63 about 4 years ago. Had to put the dry rotted spare in the seat next to me when I left the guys house because he had put some oversized tire on the rim. That was the first thing that got fixed. Nothing more embarrassing for a motor head than sitting on the side of the road with no spare tire.

I think the same way!

I bought my '69 (in '99) with the original bias ply spare. I quickly chunked it in the attic with the carrier.

A few years later, I added an electric fuel pump and modified and re-installed the carrier to protect the fuel pump from flying objects/debris. It also works nicely as a "trunk" for holding emergency items: flashlight, spare fuel pump, 12V air pump, tire plug kit, small tool case, etc.

Spare Tire

My 79 still has the original spare, according to the previous owner. I am the second owner. I pulled it out last summer to check it out. It needed air and a good cleaning. Don't know if I'd trust it as a spare though, it's 25 years old now.

Hi

No spare , no carrier.
Problem with the spare might be the size.
If you drive larger tires in the back, you possibly can't mount the spare due to possible diameter differences . This will within a few miles cook your posi clutch in the differential.
So, for all those driving non stock tire sizes, pls check that the diameter ( circumference ) of the tires is exact similar, otherwise no need to carry the spare as it could only be used in the front.
Just a thought , but failure can be expensive.

Speaking of spares, you guy's running 255/60-15's should be aware that it won't go into the spare carrier if you get a flat and try to stow it there. It's risky on the rear deck, heavy. Ain't but one place left. Your wife's lap!

So what size tire should fit in a 68 compartment (standard or smaller)? This is how stupid I was... I didn't even know there was a spare tire compartment on mine until a buddy pointed it out. Sheesh! I opened up, and of course, no tire.

-ready for any eventuality...

:crazy -found Blade's "YoYo-Gal" above most entertaining; --back on topic now, don't all C3-Vette's have dual-spares like my below neo-classic Berlina-coupe ('80/C3-chassis & interior); -but while the grounded tires are 235R75x15"(front) & 255R70x15"(rear) on 8"-rims, -the spares are only 225R75x15"(on 6"-rims)...
~Bob Vonheck ;shrug (sorry, repeated tries, --cannot manage to leave 98kb-image using manage-attachments below!!)

I carried my spare around with me until I rebuilt the rear suspension. Then I just left the rear tire out. Now that I have had to replace the gas tank, I just went ahead and left the carrier off also. No point in having the carrier if there is not a tire up there IMO.

Just checked mine & it looks like someone broke a key off in the lock, I thought at first it was a sliding door and sprayed it with penetrating oil but it looks like a key...should I drill it out or is there another way?..looks like original spare, not much air left though.

I have never had mine down. I can see the corner of the tire through a space between the bottom and top of the carrier. Only got ignition keys with the car. Im guessing another type of key operates the lock?

Joe,
You need the round top key for for the tire lock. At least that's what opens it on my 76.

Thanks for the info....looks like Im going to have to break in

When I went to 255/45/17 tires & wheels the larger size would not fit the carrier. So I dumped the extra wieght and equipped the car with a tire plug kit, a 12 volt compressor and some tools.

My 81 has one since I purchased it new in 81 and the spare is the original full size spare tire. I tried / had to use it once, but found that it was flat. Inflated ok and I made it home, since that time I have checked it about every year or so and always find it hasn't stayed inflated. Don't know if the rim or tire bead are bad; anyone out there had similar experience?

Original spare

My '75 Coupe has the original spare which has never been on the ground. Probably has the ORIGINAL AIR! Wonder what some NCRS folks would give for it. :L

I've got the OE (narrow) factory spare for my 81...but I don't think the bigger OE size running tire will fit up in the carrier if need be :ugh ...never tryed it!
PS. I check the spare at every oil change.

My 81 came with a full size spare, which is still there, even thou the two times I went / had the need to use it, it was dead flat and was of no help or needed to be re-inflated before mounting. A flat spare can really test ones desire to throw it as far as possible, one solution is be sure to carry one of those "Fix a Flat" cans; but beware that those also can go out of date and clog-up, i.e. so much dead weight.
