Speaking of spares, you guy's running 255/60-15's should be aware that it won't go into the spare carrier if you get a flat and try to stow it there.
...
Oh great, as thats what Im running, Firestone Indy 500's
Anyone know what the OE tire size was on a 81?

On the short list of upgrades - good version of "doughnut" for bigger tank

I have been checking out the availability of 3" & 4" racing wheels for a right diameter version of a "doughnut" to be able to make the spare half the height for a much bigger custom tank in place of the soon to be installed 20 gallon unbladdered OEM style. The right higher speed and load front wheel off a drag application is over ten pounds lighter and up to 4-5" narrower than the 15x8" rally mounted one. This would have the added plus of lowering the COG somewhat with both a lighter tire and the average fuel level being moved several inches lower.

BTW - the tire on the current spare is a more worn one of the ones on the car, not the original. I assumed this was the best answer to the poll though....

BTW, I'm considering rigging something to put the jack and folding lugwrench handles in the carrier to move the weight lower and rearward.

The carrier will hold the P195 80/15 that came with my 81 when I purchased it in Jan 1981. I also found that the flat P255 R60/15 will need to go inside on the deck for the trip to the repair shop.

Replaced the stock Goodyear ZPs with Michelin Pilot Sport ZPs last summer at about 22K. I'm torn. The Michelin's seem to give a "softer" ride, which is great for touring, but the Goodyear's seemed better for performance driving.

Note to self...travel light with (no) luggage)!
I've had my car since new...luckily no flats...yet.

Mine has the original '79 spare, one of those small flunky space savers, it's never been on the car, knock on wood. I usually keep a can of spare air and a kit to plug a nail hole in the compartment with the jack. That said, it's time for new tires, before my words come back to haunt me. LOL

didn't quite know how to answer the poll question. bought my car without any spare tire in it, a carrier lock that wouldn't even accept a key in the keyway (it was either painted over, or road crapped over) as the key part of the boot was open to expose the entire lock. have ordered the parts to replace the entire bolt/lock assembly an will get to it after i'm done painting and re-installing the exhaust manifolds this weekend, lol.

The spare (and POS original tire) is right where it belongs, in my side yard! I pulled out the spare, no jack, aluminum heads, aluminum intake, my car has been on a diet! The carrier and lock are in place though.

My spare is in the holder, but after I checked it I found that it is not original (the rim is painted silver) and it has a Firestone 500 mounted on it. right now I can't decide what to do. I guess if I leave the spare there I will have to get new rubber.

Do you think I should get new rubber, and put it back under there or just go with a can of fix a flat and throw the spare in the yard???

Sure carry and use the fix-a-flat it it will work!
But I would always carry a spare...what happens if a running tire gets destroyed so bad the fix-a-flat is no good?

My 73 has a firestone 500 radial under it. Appears to have never been on the ground. The very thin whitwall still has blue on it

I did get stuck last year when I got a rivet in my sidewall. Thankfully the nearby tire store (Late on a Friday Afternoon) had a very old and dusty display tire that according to the manager they had been trying to unload for years...It just happened to be the right size! My goodyears were so old I couldn't get a match for the life of me.

4 new Pilots a few weeks later were the cure (ouch). I sent 3 perfectly good Goodyears down the road.

spare is in place but no jack on my 1970 lt1. anyone know where ican find one.
Ed

did you look under the tray behind the seat. I just found mine yesterday :L

There's a jack that came with my car, and judging by the looks of it, I'd have to say it's original. It sure does look 34 years old!
There's a tire in my spare tire compartment, but I've never opened it.....obviously, I wouldn't expect to be using it if I ever had a flat....don't know if it's original or not, but one of these days I'll check it out!

When I bought my car 4 years ago I checked to see if it had a spare. It looked good so I closed it up and never thought about it again. When i replaced my gas tank a couple of months ago and took the tire out the back side of the tread was coming apart.I'm glad i never had to use it.
