I have an '86 Coupe that I am trying to figure out what the original paint color(s) were. Here is what I have found on the car BSE/CLR COAT WA - U8771. Some of the purple paint has peeled off to reveal the original paint. It looks to me that the top half of the car is gold metallic and the bottom half is medium brown metallic, but I can't find that color combo for 1986.

Any ideas?

I have seen that color combo before but dont know the code .

According to the Black Book, the color choices available in two-tone for 1986 include:
  • 13/18 Silver/Gray (1,049)
  • 18/41 Gray/Black (1,138)
  • 40/13 White/Silver (693)
  • 59/69 Silver Beige/Medium Brown (1,014)

and a special order code (Malcom Konner Commemorative Edition)
  • (spec) Silver Beige/Black (50)

I know it's not much help; for all I know you already have the Black Book. :v

I had a chance to look at a Black Book, but it didn't help me very much. I am at a loss on what "WA - U8771" means. Is it something rare?

From the paint manufacturers' lists as of
mid-eighties:

For an Alpha Romero:

Rosso Amaranto- Amaranth (Plum) (Ditzler 50772, DuPont 8771)

Is your purple plum?

On the two-tone, check '84 RPO D84, 63/66, I think you'll match (not sure if it carried over into '85/86).

hmmmm I dont think it is a plum, more of a blue-ish purple. I have a pic of it on my web page (see sig). Thanks for your effort. I didnt know that trying to figure out the original color of a car was so hard.:crazy :hb
.

Did you like the two-tone info?

Yes I did, thanks. I am wanting to go all original on this car but if I had an '84 paint scheme on it, then it wouldnt be original. No body would probably ever notice but it would bother me. I guess I'm just weird like that
.

What's the trim plate show for original color code?

Is the trim plate the thing that has the RPO codes on it? If so, it says "BSE/CLR COAT WA - U8771"
.

Is there an L code as well? The U refers to upper body color; an L code would be the lower body color. An A code next to the U code would be accent or stripe.

If you don't have an L, then it wasn't originally double-color (99% sure of that). Here's the breakdown of your RPOs:

AG9 - 6-way power seats
AQ9 - seat, front bucket, driver and passenger, reclining
AU3 - power locks
A42 - 6-way BENCH seat??1
BGR - Bowling Green plant
B3W - ????
CC3 - transparent plastic removeable roof
C49 - rear electric defogger
C60 - manual AC controls
DL8 - electric outside mirrors w/defog
D7A - ??? gear-driven speedo
D9A - vehicle speed sensor
E5Z - ???
E9Z - ???
GM1 - 2.59 rear axle ratio
KB2 - cast iron cylinder heads
K34 - electronic cruise control
K68 - 105 amp alternator
L98 - L-98 5.7l engine
MD8 - 700R4/4L60 4-speed auto transmission
MX0 - automatic overdrive option
NA5 - federal emissions requirements
PY3 - 16x8.5 wheels, aluminum
QZD - ??? (prob. tire size)
UQ4 - Bose speakers w/amp
UU8 - radio, am/fm/cassette. bose w/clock
V73 - ???
Z6A - defogger system, rear window/outside mirrors
1AY - ???
64S - removeable roof color, bronze
65I - interior trim light oak or medium antelope
652 - leather, medium antelope
69U - exterior color, medium beechwood metallic (probably med. brown metallic, which is code 69)

So there you have it... medium brown metallic.

Still not sure about the 8771; mine says 8774 and is red if that helps... Sorry about the missing codes; my book doesn't have everything.

Dang, C5D! Beat me while I was typing...

BTW - only 431 COUPES were med. brown metallic... 57 convertibles. But no record I can find of how many had bronze interiors and how many had saddle.

Rips, came out of Mike Antonic's "Cor-Vette Specs, C4 Edition", page 89. If you don't have this book, it's a must-buy.
