TPI possable computer problem

Hopefully someone can help> I have an 89 TPI motor that I just rebuilt. we put sportsman 202 heads on it with a comp cam that should pull to 6500 RPM high flow edelbrock intake and runners forged flat top pistons and forged rods, 30Lb injectors and a 58 mm throttle body. The car is just starting to pull hard at 3500 RPM like I want but it falls on its face at about 4500 RPM like it has a rev limiter or something and then it starts to pull again. Im wondering if the stock computer has a rev limiter or something any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are running the stock intake, it's a major restriction in allowing the engine to breathe. You didn't mention exhaust - what are you running for headers and pipes? The engine's gotta breathe to make horsepower, or even just to spin it fast. ;)

Hey NOS,

Even though you are using the larger runners, the intake itself is killing your performance.

You have to replace the whole thing with something designed to let the motor breath better.

Your options.

Miniram
Stealthram
LT1 intake conversion

This will let you climb above that 4500 zone and keep pulling to 6,000. That is the zone where you will find the real benefit of all your mods.

wow, wouldn't a 58mm tb be too much for a 350?

Would he need some major chip work with those mods?

I gotta stop replying to these questions when it's late and I'm tired. I never even saw the comment about using the Edelbrock intake and larger runners.

But my question as to the exhaust is still appropriate, plus it will help answer Ed's question about whether a 58 mm TB is too much for a 350.

And Chris, my Miniram doesn't quit a six grand; I could easily spin it past 6500 but my cam peaks at that point. I bumped once yesterday showing off in front of my place. :L

If this car has all the modifications listed but a stock calibration in the computer, before you do anything else, you need to have the ECM properly calibrated for your engine set-up.

If there are any other problems, they are going to be masked by the use of a stock calibration with an engine modified to the extent listed.

Even with the Edelbrock manifold and runners, its not going to pull to 6500rpm. The TPI setup dies at around 5000rpm. It simply cannot flow the air at that point.

A computer reprogram wont fix that, but it may give more low-end and midrange power.

Thanks for the input everyone. he car is pulling to 6000 RPM now. We did some plug re gapping and changed the timing. However the car is surging now and wants to idle at 1500 RPM after you get on the throttle. This is my complete setup. 6 AL MSD,hyperteck strip chip, super comp hooker headers, 2 1/2" exhaust, two chamber flow masters, twin 58 mm throttle body, sportsman heads, 306 comp cam ( roller ), roller rockers, edelbrock high flow intake and runners, 30Lb injectors, flat top forged pistons, forged rods, running 10.8 to 1 compression. The car is perfoming pretty good now but this idle problem has me stumped. Is it the computer? Another question I wired my fans direct to get the car to run cooler. this would'nt affect the idle would it? I am trying to decide whether it is worth getting my stock computer re programmed or should I go to an after market performance computer. If I change computers what computer should I go to? Your replies are greatly appreciated as I don't want to go and spend money on something that is not going to work if possible. Thanks Tim

,hyperteck strip chip,

I think this could be a problem. How could a mass produced chip like a Hypertech totally get you every hp that's possible? They just can't account for all those combination of mods that you've done. I would suggest getting a custom burned chip. Can be costly, but well worth it.

Think I made a decision about my computer

After everyones input I have decided to go with a new computer. I am going to install the holly 950. Hopefully the input I have gotten is right and the car will perform to its capabilities. Has anyone else installed this computer? If so I would appreciate any input that you might have. The shop that is installing the new computer after running some tests on my car claim that the car is probably short about 100 hp with the way the factory computer is set up. I talked to quite a few people and the consenses seems to be the same with everyone.Of coarse I am very skepticle about the amount of power I am loosing due to the computer that is why I am asking for input from you guys. Any help would be appreciated thanks Tim.

What?:confused
