I just changed the oil, the filter and oil pan seal in my transmission(stock th350). I put it together filled it up with dexron 2 and started it up.The first thing is it starts in gear, second it won't go in reverse or park. I did not touch anything else and it worked fine before changing oil. Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks
Bill

I'm gonna move your thread to the main C3 tech forum for better visibility since I don't think the TH350 was special for '81.

Be my guess that you didn't get the shift cable bracket back on the pan bolts where it belongs!!:thumb :D:D:D

When you pulled the pan off, didn't you have to move the shifting cable?? You have changed something when doing this, you have changed the cable adjustment, starting in gear is acomplished because the safety switch is under the console and will start if the adjustment is off. The transmission does't care if it is gear or not when the engine is started, it is a safety problem to start in gear and rev the motor, the car starts moving, and bang you have hit something. The safety switch makes it only possible to start in neutral or park, but , if that adjustment is off, you can start in any gear. Chech what you took off to pull the pan, look it over and put it back like it was beforeand your problem will be fixed. Taking the filter off and replacing it won't affect the problem you are having.

But puting the shift cable Bracket back toward of the rear of the pan 1 or 2 bolts from where it's supposed to be, Will not let it go into Park or Reverse and it will START in gear!!:thumb :D
