Man, over five and a half seconds to get to 60?

That's the big thing where these cars lose out: in practical performance. Who accellerates for a solid 1/4-mile on the street? Not many. But how many of us have to get up to speed after a stop light or somesuch?

With no torque, these little 4-bangers have no real-world performance. They always have to invent all sorts of artificial conditions to allow themselves to compete. :( When they want to compare their car, running race fuel and with a completely illegal exhaust system, to your street-legal Corvette that runs fine on 93 octane from any gas station in the country, you know they can't compete, in the real world.

autocross

I know I got smoked by a few when I was autocrossing, I contributed this to street tires, cornering and wieght. I have the torque, maybe to much to be making corners and not being to get out of first gear. Later, the same day EVERYONE got beat by two go-carts with lawnmower engines:D

Your sister in-law’s argument may have some merit based on what performance means to her but her hatred of American cars is based on fiction and possibly her feelings of guilt and inadequacy.

There is more to a Corvette than numbers on a spec sheet. Most Japanese cars are disposable. Just look around for a clean 1969-74 Datsun 240Z then look for a clean 1969-74 Corvette.

I had a friend that wouldn't date pretty women. He thought good-looking women were too self-centered. He said the “plain Janes” tried harder in the sack. That never made any sense to me. I saw it as mindless bigotry. I think he was just afraid of rejection. Maybe we should introduce them. (As long as she doesn’t wear any make-up and he still drives a Toyota.)

Race her and when you beat her, just laugh. Then whatever mod she does, you do the same mod to your car. When you race again and beat her again laugh harder. Keep this up. She will eventually see the light and give up or run out of money.

Lets see-

One good condition, late model, low miles C4.
$17,000
One paxton, one free flow exhaust, one 3.73 rear gear set $6,000

Low 12 second time slips
Mid 20s mpg
World class handling
Chevy V8 reliability
Looking good while doing all the above

Still worth over 85% of investment after of few years of fun.
