Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Well I'm back & wrenchin on the 64

And Sears comes through

My son broke 2 Craftsman 3/8 drive wratchets...
So I needed to take mutley out for a drive...to test everything out...

I took the two tools, knowing last time I got grief trying to exchange..
So the kid ( and I do mean KID ) there looked through his tool box, and said "Sorry sir I do not have these to exchange right away.. BUT I can have them repaired for you at no charge, right now."
20 minutes later ( and resisting every urge to buy MORE TOOLS ) I walked out with my 2 wrachets repaired & cleaned for no charge..

WIN!

Oh and the rant continues.. the " kit " should have included ( for the bracket that attaches to the top of the clutch pedal) a button head allen for the top mount bolt.. Using the stock hardware, the top bolt rubs the upper rod when you push the clutch all the way in..

Did you use the super-thick steel flat washer/spacer between the bracket and the pushrod? If you don't, the top bracket bolt will interfere with the pushrod when the pedal is pushed...

It's shown in your Assembly Manual, section 7, sheet C2.00, item #4.

Dear John

I'm refering to this " Hi Po " linkage
Corvette Rod End Clutch Linkage w Hardware 327 | eBay
And there is zero clearance to get ANY kind of washer in between...
The heim joint is a slip fit and JUST enough clearance to get a cotter pin back in....

The button head allen does the trick.. and JUST clears ( by .125 ) ...

Mike

So glad to see you having fun again

I remember the 2003 thread, and it surte is fun to see you ''Having so much fun'' with this car. I can't wait for future stories.

PS, M & H WIRE HARNESS is right here is Santa Fe, Springs. Reproduction Wiring Harnesses for America's Muscle Cars

The guys back east, KEN HANNA and all are great, but over the years I used M&H because they were closer, and sometimes it just made more sense to go to front door and ''see and feel'' what they offered. They even made me a special harness for my race car MSD Box that was hidden under the dash. All looked factory TI. Keep us all posted with your progress.

Update & Question

Front bumper bracket set arrived...
Waiting on Pass side bumper... soon, very soon.

Drum brake question

So when crusing brakes work properly
Emergency stop... pulls HARD to the left...

All wheel cylinders are NEW
( no traces of leaking )
All hoses are NEW
hard lines are NEW
all shoes are NEW ( well less than 200 miles on em )
Master ( single cylinder ) NEW
Vac booster NEW

Front suspension bushings are a bit cracked but not worn out....

So what is the proper adjustment procedure.. and or bleeding order??

Mike

I was always taught that you started the furthest away from the master cylinder (RRear) then the next furthest (LRear) and then the next (RFront) and then the closet (LFront). I can only assume that the brakes are all adjusted correctly as well. A brake adjusted too tight could cause that condition.

Ok after a bit of reading.....

BUT THIS JUST IN... the other front bumper came in today !!!!!!
So now I have brackets, bumpers... but no bolts.. well not matching bolts...

So if I understand the shop manual correctly...
put the car in reverse and slam the brakes on 5-6 times to have the star adjusters tension the brakes up....

If it's still not right... bleeeed em
Still not right... check brake hardware for broken worn out adjusters and worn springs...

AND the engine in the garage.. on the stand since 04....
327
Casting 3858174
There is a J65 cast on the other side of the block ( Have no idea what that means ).
Will look for a date code on the pass side of the block.
Blocks been decked ( no numbers there )
Double hump heads W 2.02 in there

So more research is in order

Mike
No back up VIN by oil fliter

And WUSSED out

I took the car to the only LOCAL body, paint , frame guy in Santa Clarita I TRUST...
I told Ritchie ( at A & K Frame & Body ) to install the front bumpers...

I had another plan today anyway... new Wilwood calipers in my G35 ( ok ok it's not a Vette )

That damn near killed me.. so attacking on multiple fronts...
And now a NAP

Later check out the engine in the garage further.....

Mike

That block was used in millions of 327 passenger cars and trucks from '64-'67, and in '66 Corvettes. J 6 5 is the block casting date (October 6, 1965).

Thanks John!

So now where are the numbers for the tranny and the diff ?

The J65 engine is the one that will go in ( when all is said and done ).....

As you know Mutley has been teething for a while

TADA....FRONT TEETH!
( first time since 1966... best guess )

It's official I have a cold

I was going to go and make a day of it under the hood.. starting with Alt relocation...
But yesterday afternoon, after I picked up Mutley.. and got Chinese food... it hit me.. BIG TIME...

My nose starter running worse than my old C-4 water pump....

Well not a total loss... time to do research.. but no progress today I'm afraid...

And I have a new noise.. it sounds like the clutch return spring resonates at a certain engine RPM....
ARRGGHH...

So the list ( as of now ) in no particular order

Redo the seats. Mmmmm leather.
Replace the carpet.
Replace Drivers & Pass side arm rests on door panels.
Fix the clock.
Better knob for trip odo reset.
New radiator ( correct one, aluminum ).
New fuel pump ( I think it's original.. for that engine.. yikes ).
Fuel hard lines up to carb.
Steering column top bearing.
Figure out why brakes pull to the left.
OR
just swap out to a front /rear caliper setup & switch to a dual master setup.
Power steering ram ( leaker ) .
Pull out headers, sand blast & paint or replace.
Window seals, guides, and all that.
Order door seals & install.
Put Alt on flip side ( to prep for vintage air ).
Order & install vintage air.
Dash replacement ( all the padding & center console is just FUNKY )
Finish finding out exactly what heads are in Mutley now.
Get tranny numbers.
Put reverse switch on tranny.
Pass side door lock doesn't anymore.
Drivers side wind wing " transmission " replace.
Install Hurst " repro " shift lever.
Put in new shift boot.
Repaint center console & fix ashtray sliding door.
RIMS....
Lower rear end..currently I have a 7 leaf one in there, thinking about the " lowering bolt set " longer trailing arm to spring bolt set...
it's lifted about 2" in the back compared to the front.. looks a bit agriculture.. Billy Bob.
Find out why the ride is so HARD, yes I know it's a C2.. but it rides like an ARMY JEEP with frozen suspension.. would like it a BIT more cushy...so I don't dislodge my spine on a pot hole.
Replace fuel tank to frame hard line hose.. it sweating... not good!
Spare tire carrier.
New stereo.
New kick panel speakers.
Install 6X9 component speakers in rear deck tool tray cover.
Get quote on engine in garage ( minor finish up work ,re seal & Dyno ).
Find a better 327 intake
Engine swap
and
Tremec 5 speed....

Hey a guy can dream... must be the Dayquill..

Mike

Front anti sway bar...

I take it there are a few sizes for the front..
sway bar OD

15/16 " normal "
1 1/8" Front Sway Bar FE7 Gymkhana ??
1-1/4
I have no rear anti sway bar...
7 leaf rear spring ( but that looks newer than the car... ).

I assume that the amount of wear on the front sway bar & clamps that's original...

The shocks that came out on 03 were monroe matics ( not stock ) LOL.
I have the stock delco's ( From Mid America now ).

I assume ( again ) that the suspension pkg is springs shocks & swaybar
From Cranes Corvette:
Corvette 1963-1977 F-41 Front Sway Bar F41 Stabilizer Bar. Exact forging as original is 15/16" dia. for heavy Duty Suspension

So does that mean I do or do not have heavy duty F40 ( special front & rear suspension ) not that I wan't that .

Midyear front sway bars:

Standard - 3/4"

Big-Block - 7/8"

Big-Block w/F41 - 15/16"

Rear Sway Bar - only used on '65-up big-blocks.

Rear Springs - All used the same 9-leaf spring, except big-block with F41, which used a 7-leaf HD spring (twice the rate of the 9-leaf spring).

John your A FOUNT OF INFO

So 7 leaf BAD .... now I know why it drives ( and looks stance wise ) like a tractor....
Thanks!!

Mike

Mike

The composite spring is lighter, but they're "bouncy" (due to lack of inter-leaf friction), and as a result they require unique rear shocks that are specifically valved for composite springs, with higher rebound damping, to minimize the "bouncy-bouncy" syndrome.

OK good info

On order...
9 leaf spring ( stock ) .
New rubber, bolts and such.
Door weather strips for around the door.
( Took advantage of Corvette Central free shipping Oh yeah.. )

Fleabay order
Custom clamps for the alt relocation.
Hurst " repro " T handle shifter. ( I have hurst linkage ).
Shift boot.

Checking account speed buzzer warning......
