Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Well I'm back & wrenchin on the 64

I don't know enough about knockoffs to give you any advice. Hopefully one of the veterans will wade in shortly?

Update

Broken pin drilled out ( seems like .a .156 pin X 1.25 ) , wheel off cleaned center hub & cap of WAY to much RTV that didn't bond.
New RTV applied & curing ( 24 hrs ), will mount the wheel back on in ~ 8 hrs...

All parts for replacement on order, but I'll bet it will not arrive today : (

Not sure I want to drive it W/O the pin for any great distance...

New LED light installed in cargo / top storage area.....

Now trying to figure out a GOOD way to remove all the Black splayed RTV off the rim..
WD-40 ( no ) carb cleaner ( no ) 3M adhesive remover ( no ) brass wire brush (meh)

Thinking hi pressure washer will do the trick...

Next moves, intake & spare tire carrier on the way... gotta start hunting for a carb

Nailed it LOL

So looks like I needed a ~5/32 cold roll pin which is .1562
After digging in my parts assortments... no luck
I was going to cut a drill bit, but that's to hard,, if it gets jammed.. I'll NEVER get that out...
And it hit me... 10 penny nail .152 and a 1 wrap exactly of tape .155...
Tapped it in.. a whack of the lead hammer to lock, crimp it, cover cap back on, finished..

( Disclamer ) I have the correct pins on order, but I did want to drive it today...

Original KO's had no pin and if installed properly NEVER come loose. The fact that your pin fell half way out indicates that the spinners are probably not tightened sufficiently. Don't rely on a stronger pin to keep the wheels on the car.

Mikey

The pin didn't " fall out " it was mashed back in ( mushroomed ) enough so it wouldn't go back in all the way...
That spinner was ON and took high strike force to just budge it... The PIN to me is just saftey ( read paranoia )
LOL

If the wheel is installed/oriented correctly (drive pins on the adapter in the five small holes and lug nuts in the five larger clearance holes) and a film of anti-seize is used both on the spinner and adapter threads and on the angled mating surfaces on the spinner and the wheel, the wheel isn't going to go anywhere. The film of anti-seize is important, to minimize thread friction that will require much higher torque (hammer blows) on the spinner to create the required clamping force in the joint between the spinner and the wheel. The KO hammer that came with the car originally is a one-time-use roadside emergency tool; what you want is a 5# or 6# "Mother-Thumper" lead hammer. Six or seven whacks with that (with the tire on the ground), and you're good. :thumb

John you read my mind

the first thing I did when I got the goodies was to sort out the adaptors & spinners for D/S P/S and mark em....
THEN cleaned the threads with WD-40, wiped them down, used the air hose and did the anti seize......

My one time hammer is hammered.. and I did buy a new #5... which is getting a workout....

Updates
Carb came in..
Intake came in...
Battery died.... : (

I was an idiot

Left the car in ACC.. and the radio was on..... 2 nights.. whoops...

Rocker covers came in
Spare tire carrier came in ( need some hardware, oh and a tire for the spare )
Gaskets still on order
New thermo cover ( more correct ) ordered..

Stuff happens. Charge it up and your good to go. I can't wait until I have a battery to kill by leaving the key on.

461 intake question

So I was cleaning the 461 preppin it to go on my ride....
It was a little dirty and a bit funky so I started with pulling all the mechanical stuff off the intake ..
Lo and behold it all came out with no additional thread damage.
One of the carb studs had the first 2 threads a bit buggered,,, ran a tap down everything and all are back in...
I have a original GM temp sender WOO HOO...
Got the fitting off the front of the intake for heater core ( factory rust from 64 ) ...going to replace that fitting...
All gasket surfaces cleaned... so I thought I would wipe things down with a bit of carb cleaner,,,

Paint came off... So is the final finish on the intake ... paint ?
If so is there a " special " paint for that ?
I'm this far... and would like it to be lookin good...and as correct as possible... all things considered.
I have to wait for some misc stuff to come in, so I have about a week...

Everything I touched turned to POO yesterday

We started the AM off with a torn up bag of dogfood, racoon attack..
vacuume 4 lbs of dry dogfood up...
Upon getting up hit head on corner of drop light, ( for shop vac power ) which caused a retract of the light...
This knocked my sons motorcycle jack the rear tire up stand off the roof hanger, hit shoulder...

3 of the rivets on the spare carrier, broke ( had to do the round head allen, big washer trick )
Dropped the box of 8/32 allens.. Upon getting up knocked 8" cresent wrench off work bench.. hit foot

Spare tire carrier IN kinda, the D/S hanger nut weld sheared when I had it the bolt 1/2 way in...
and I did run a tap thru everything FIRST
But it did carry a spare W/O issue...

Off to the tire store to have them get the goo off my rim... ( thinking to myself, should I drive the car today?!?)
Jack up car, remove existing right rear wheel, remove spare rim, swap tire on spare rim balance.. so far so good
Explained the spinner pin to the tire guy... bueno..
But NOW I had nothing to put in the spare compartment...

Uno... basura... nematico,, aqui......

1st tire way to small...

No, No Uno mas.....Mas grande

And off I went...

Near my house, a squirrel jumps out into road, slam on brakes.... squirrel scampered away
But I hear that distinctive sound of the trim cap for the spinner popping off & rolling down the road.... ting ta ting... ting ting
Recoverd that ( at least it was one I needed to replace anyway ).

At this point, I decided that turning a wrench was going to be a hazard....

I loaded all my " aquired " parts up, told my son to follow me and took em to the frame, body & paint shop...
dropped the pile on Ritchies shelf, gave him my keys.. and said expect an E mail with a punch list....

I retired to my lab at home and worked on an antique clock.. at least that was safe ( er )

Some days it's just better to stay in bed. :z

Wow! I would have given up a lot sooner than you.

You will finally get there!

:w

Squirrel!

Gads, you should have run over that fuzzy tailed rodent! Well, maybe the squish factor could have messed up your car. I just grit my teeth and hope that small darting mammal is quick enough to get out of the way. Most of the ones I have encountered lived to frighten another motorist.

My 461 is natural aluminum, maybe someone applied some Bubba chrome. Small wire brushes and solvent will get the gunk off. Try 'Goof Off' a medium level solvent. You can find it at hardware stores in the paint section.

100_2865.jpg This is my 461 in bare aluminum, I have only used Simple Green and water with a old tooth brush to get the 47 years of loose dirt off. I was going to use Goof Off to see if the staining comes up. Some of the
Permatex used to seal the water jacket is still on the front of the manifold. Inside looks like the outside.100_2866.jpg Except where the coolant was allowed to transfer rust to the inside.
