I had exactly the same problem, I though replacing the wires would be one of the easier ways I could work on the car and help the performance, I was wrong, I am glad I got it done but it was the hardest set of plug wires I have ever installed. Actually the front two on the passengers side did not get replaced. I had just removed and replaced the starter the night before I started the plug wires and I was not going to remove it again just to get the shield off so I could replace those two wires, I inspected them and they are in good shape, so were all the ones I removed actually, so I did a "bubba" and just changed six of the wires, car runs great, radios sounds good and started works fine so I am happy.
The next week I did the the "u-joints" that is also a job that lots of folks do but if I had to do it again I would just pay to get it done like I did with the read wheel bearings.
