What Tires? (yes, again!)

Vettelt193 said:
I understand that... but on the flip side of the coin, if you dump a thousand bucks or more into tires, your car won't be worth any more.... and it is tough for me to put almost 10% of the cars value into it on something that needs replacing. On an older C4, $1,000 may be far more than 10% :(

I think it depends on wether you plan on driving it, or selling it.:w

My 91 came with a newer set of Dunlop 5000's on it. Overall, they're an Ok tire. I haven't driven the car in the rain, so I can't comment on wet performance. They're rated at either 300 or 320 treadwear. I have had GY F1 tires on 2 previous vehicles, and found they wear VERY quickly. Wet performance was average, dry performance was pretty good. I wouldn't replace tires with GY, just due to the high price and low treadwear. I've used Toyo's in the past and had very good luck with them. Good treadwear and all ratings, good wet and dry performance.
My car is a garage queen and is only driven around 3k miles a year. I had problems with the softer compound tires getting flat spots sitting in the garage. No problems with the harder compounds.

Goal: not racing, not dragging - longer trips, want good ride with good handling - wet weather traction desireable. No, I DON'T drive my baby in the rain as a rule, but have been caught out a couple of times.
I love my GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3s.

The main reasons I bought these tires:
1. OVERALL RANKING - Ranked first by Tire Rack in their Max Performance Summer category - see link http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=MP
The D3 also compares farvorably to most of the tires listed in the Ultra High Performance ranking as well - in fact nothing in that list can match the wet traction and hydro resistance scores of the D3.
2. PRICE - At $200/tire (for rears - 285s), they were significantly less expensive than the EMTs and most of the other highly-rated performance tires.
3. good looking tread design.

Placed Order

After hearing sooo many good posts about the Kumho ASX, I ordered them today from TireRack.

Great service from Luke at TireRack - lots of help on the phone, and they shipped within a couple of hours. Only downside is that they didn't give me a UPS tracking number...

The local guy will gladly put them on. He priced Kumho's himself, and couldn't touch the TireRack price. Not to worry, he is glad to have me order them - saves him the trouble. I am also going to have him put on the new front spoilers when she is up on the rack.

Thanks all for the help,

Bob

neede 4 tires and being a cheap b-st-rd i bought kuhmo tires.AA+ milage but seem hard. dont stick too good in the rain/cold.but try to drive civil so they are OK for me.

I have the Kuhno Ectsa ASX on mine have not driven much on them but compared to the fire hawks that were on it I have improved ride and they are very quiet. I have done a little agressive cornering and they hold well. For the money if you aren't a boy racer and like good milage I rcommend them. Tire tread "look" does not influence my decisions some of the best looking ones are crap. With a tred rating of 400( 4X the normal wear rate) They are a great buy. A lot of tires flat spot if sat too long so to fix that just drive it more often.

I drive my C4 daily. I have probably racked up more miles on various C4's than 99% of the people out there... My 'nice weather' vehicle is a Harley.

When it comes to tires, I have had Dunlops, Goodyear Gatorbacks, Goodyear GSC's, Goodyear F1's, and Kumhos.

For anyone that is really into drag racing; get a set of drag radials.
For anyone that is into autocross... to each his own, and money is less of an issue.

For the rest of us all around drivers; value tends to be better influence than any. If I have the choice to save $400+ on my tires to get better value, I can spend that on something else for the car or just save it.... I can throw a cam into my car for about that (if I want performance).

And even when it comes to racing: Who do you have your money on in a race... the guy with Kumhos and a better cam, or the guy with $1,000+ tires? It has been my experience that the people who really drive their cars tend to pass up the really expensive tires.

Well put!

Bob

Guys:
Remember, any mod to the engine of course make the car faster..... In straight line !
Tires play an extremely important role in curves, braking, and some in acceleration.
If you have the chance to race in the streets like here in Mexico not only the straight acceleration is important but to maintain the highest speed possible in street corners, where most of the regular driver are. And remember 2 or 3 of those chasing street races can take like 15% of your tires life.

Remind me to take a cab only when visiting Monterrey!

Thank you for the comments Alvaro.

Man, where were you when I was engagement ring shopping for LSA? :D
After reading your post, I'm rethinking my next tire purchase. I may have to put some "sensible shoes" on her instead (the car that is). Heck, I need the extra money to pay off the ring!

GOOD POST! :upthumbs

I hear ya, I was in your situation not long ago:) Don't cheap out on the ring though, that is permenant:D

Got 'Em

I have to admit that I am very happy with the service from TireRack. I ordered (the Kumho ASX's) on Monday, about 1PM, and had them in my hands Wednesday afternoon.

Tomrrow they go on!

Bob

I put the Toyo Proxies T1S's on my 92, As it is a daily driver I am out in all weather conditions. We had torrential rain last month and I have never driven a car with as much traction in the wet as these. That and the tread pattern is awsome to look at......:D

The service from the tire rack is better than any "face to face" service I've experienced from local tire stores......there's no BS.....nobody trying to sell you something you don't want. You buy your tires, and they show up at your door in a couple of days. I'm on my third set of tires from them and I've never had a problem.

Same here I have bougt 4 sets of tires from Tirerack and the service has always been great.

At Moonunit´s advice I went with Firestone SZ50´s for the back of Thunder and they do a good job of keeping the beast attached to the road.

Until yesterday I had a set of Kumho´s for the track but that is for a different thread. They were very good. I would buy this brand without worry.

Got 'em on today - just drove 2 miles home, so not a very good test. But they seem OK. One BIG difference - they are MUCH quieter than what I had on (Goodyear GS something, I think on the front, junk on the rear) and that alone is worth it to me.

It cost $55 to mount and balance (and dispose of the old) so I got away for under $600 totay - very happy.

More reports later.

I replaced "like new" Goodyear GT+4's with Firestone Indy 500's on my '71 last year, and couldn't believe the difference. The Goodyears were loud, and terrible handling tires. I was really disappointed with them, although I still have them....just not on the car.
