Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

why do i need an X-pipe?

I have the B+B quad oval tip PRT's with an H pipe.....love the pops and gurgles:beer

FYI And possibly a source of some confusion on this is the fact that the stock H pipe actually has a tiny 1/2" to 3/4" hole within the 2.5" crossover pipe. Very odd configuration if you ask me.

I would really like to hear from someone that has replaced the stock H pipe with a true 2.5" H pipe or crossover pipe... Didn't NASCAR populaize this design?

i have the stock h pipe with flowmasters, the poping is so loud i think it scares people next to yhe car. i look over and give them the thumbs up and usually they return that blank stupid look, like what the hell was that. i love it. flows are not as loud as stingers and cost a lot less. for my money i 'll keep the flowmasters:) :) :) :) :) .:)
I have the same setup but don't notice bad poping, just a nice gurgle when slowing down BUT I also have the A4, is your's auto or man?
Doc

Six speed

hi doc, my 2003 z06 is a 6 speed like all z06's, I think it's even louder when cold and you first start out. great fun these vetts would't trade em for any thing.;););););););););););););););););););););););););)Billy

Do you NEED an X-pipe over the factory installed H-Pipe? No. Just like you don't NEED a Borla or Corso Exhaust upgrade over the factory original.

As a matter of personal preference, however, many Corvette owners don't like the popping, gurgling, motor boat sound their Vette makes upon deceleration. The only way to get rid of it is to change out the pipe configuration to one which balances pressures a bit more to remove the sound. That change is the X-Pipe.

Again, this a matter of personal preference, NOT "need." Matters of personal taste are entirely subjective.

Hi Guys, :wI get this gurgling and ear poping everytime a take a shower, and I do beleive its an H pipe in the system somewhere so I think I will just stick with the water flow system for now:joke.....Scott:beer

Remo I do like the "Blue Dot" tail lights, just not sure I want to drill into :ohnoes an expsensive tail light housing to put them in as well as I don't think they would do a C-5 justice anyway ! What does a C-5 tail light housing cost these days in case I want to try it :L They were pretty :cool in the fifties for sure :beer

Do love them blue dots

I might be wrong, but...

I thought the point of the H-pipe was so that the "pulses" of exhaust gas between the left bank and right bank of the motor would actually have a "vaccuum" effect on each other, assisting in the flow of exhaust gasses from the engine.

I thought the X-pipe further improved on the function of the H-pipe.

Yes you are correct. That's why you'll see a HP increase with the addition of an Xpipe and because it "blends" the exhaust from both banks you get a little different tone!

If this is in fact correct; how much HP is gained?

Thanks,

Magnaflow and Borla talk about 8HP but I couldn't say for sure. My car was never on a dyno although it does seem to be more responsive low end.:upthumbs

That is not too shabby, what does this cost, is it easy to do, do you have to cut the stock exhaust out or is it something that would be better to have an exhaust shop do? And if you are going to do this should you replace the stock mufflers too?

I know I have ask more questions :confused than a 3 year old kid but they say that's how you learn things ;shrug so thank you in advance.

I installed the x pipe and a B&B bullet exhaust system myself. I will say that I have the benifit of being able to use my good friend's lift. Without the car in the air it could be a tedious job. Not imposible but I would not want to do it on the ground unless you think like one of the fellows in my club who dug a hole under the car-a little extreme for me. Yes you do have to cut off the H pipe just behind the cats. If you are going to do this invest(around 35.00) in a good chain cutter. They do a great job in a confined space. Again, I would replace the factory system
it's a little to mild for my taste but you don't have to. Exhaust systems are like tires- everyone likes a different one.Hope this helps!:w

Yes thanks for the info, I may try this one of these days, I would like a little more tone, not too loud but different if you know what I mean. I do have one of those chain tube cutters and they work pretty good. It would be nice to gain a little more HP in the process too.

Thanks again,

Good Sounds

E.O.D. - thanks for the terrific videos.
