Hello all, recently bought a 92 Supernatural that needs some TLC. Optispark is done and I plan on replacing with MSD Pro-Billet and MSD wires. Is this a good decision? Anyone know the best spark plug for this engine and set up? Any advise for the rookie would be greatly appreciated!!

Welcome
Check with Boostedmaxpsi or Shopview. They just went thru one this month. I think they had problems with the MSD.

My 1993 SuperNatural is down for the count due to a no-fire with a bad optispark, or so it seems.

I had a "weep" of coolant from the waterpump area and after a few months, I suppose the innards of the opti corroded nicely ;shrug

I am going with a service part replacment opti from GM, as NOTHING I have seen aftermarket impresses me. Same goes for plug wires. Although I have red LT4 GM wires on the car ;)

Here is the best advice I can offer on the matter: Change your water pump out at the same time you change the optispark unit. Call it cheap insurance, or whatever. It makes sense though :cool

My Callaway is in Old Lyme, CT now getting the work done, as they have a great shop with awesome employees. I hope this helps :w

previous owner just changed the water pump, so problem was likely there then. At over 100K on the odometer I suppose it's time anyway. GM opti would save me a few bucks, but my impression from web sites was MSD was good brand. Did Callaway reccommend new plugs?

If you use the GM part, I would recommend going with 95-96 "vented" optispark as it stands up a little better to moisture.

I believe shopview went with a Motec system which uses individual coils per cylinder. Hopefully he'll chime in.

If you stay stock...definitely go with the updated vented optispark as Surf said. 1 of my cars has this. The other car I went with the Dynaspark Billet which just died.

Google optispark and you'll see all sorts of pics of various optisprak brands dead. I have not used the MSD so I don't want to pass judgement but there are many stories out there good and bad.

However, on my SNAT TT car I now have the Delteq coil pack setup (although custom mounted not on the valve covers). I never want to have to change the Opti is this car again. The other 2 cars are much easier but still not a fun way to spend a day. JC at Delteq has excellent customer service ... top notch. The product is completely plug and play and well engineered. www.delteq.com tell him Mark sent you

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum!

I think Marks Opti on his SNAT Twin Turbo just got scarred of the POWA that was about to be inflicted on it and checked out early.;LOL

Welcome to the forum Mean Green '92. I personally like to stick with OEM parts. I would take this time to upgrade to the updated '94-'96 vented unit. This will allow the moisture to escape.

When you have time post some more pictures and info about your 92 SNAT.

Welcome to the show Mean Green 92!! Congrats on the SNAT purchase. Good Luck on your repair and hope to see you and your car in person some day.
:upthumbs

thanks to everyone for the welcome! seems to be lots of horror stories out there about the original 92-93 optispark and moisture. Delteq coil pack sounds interesting.. may need to look further into that.

I do not know whether you are into Corvettes already but the optispark is a general LT1 issue , not a Callaway special thing.

enjoy your beast :upthumbs

Never spray your engine off with the hose unless you know exactly where your opti is, and have it covered with plastic or a rag. :cool

That's a reason you see some dirty LT1s at carshows :L

this is my 2nd vette, (but 1st LT-1 with the optispark.) Last vette was 90 Convertible with the L98, but I felt the need for more HP!! Read about Callaway for years... couldn't pass it up when I saw this one for sale in my area.
