Assuming that the scanner will show system status as well, I'd hook the scanner up and see if anything changes when you push the button. Otherwise, I think it's a simple switch. Shop manual will help here with the troubleshooting procedure if you have one. If not it's worth your time and $$$...
The tool that Chevy put out for dealers was the Tech One. I use a Mastertech 3100. It performs the same tests a Tech One will but does some other things. These aren't simple code scanners, they'll work with the car's systems and store data, trip relays, etc.

Mine was off the road for about a year and a half. Finally got fed up and put it back together in October. I'll park it when the weather turns but not before. This year it gets parked complete with projects too, so I'll stay busy.

Follow up: started the car this morning and everything came online nicely. Drove about 20 miles to work and no DIC lights. Still going to check the pin on the passenger front shock actuator at some point. Actually, if I can find a replacement, I'll just straight out replace it.
