Generally speaking, what is a 64 roadster worth? It has both tops, new gas tank, exhaust, and tiires, original interior in need of replacement, faded original color repaint. Solid car, mechanically sound, no wreck evidence, 3 owners (2 of whiich were women drivers), 327 w/auto. I don't think engine and tranny are original. I need some ballpark input from you C2 guys.

I can get the car for $18,500.

Thanks,
CS (in the C3 roadster)

Just as a frame of reference, Bought my 64 in 2001 with the following:
327/300 NOM, M20 4spd, 3.36 posi
Original #'s matching short block included in the deal
2 tops (both good)
Needs some interior work (soon, but looks pretty good now)
All guages radio & clock work.
Wrong color (20ft car)
Side pipes
Knock offs
Been driving it daily since I got it.
Never restored, just maintained
No hidden problems yet.
Paid $23,995.00

My. 02

I got my 64 for $14.5K
$1500.00 shipping
327/4 spd
NOT STOCK/ "custom front end"
Ran & kinda drove
So far an additional 3k has been poured in.

NOT including the 3 K on the motor I built for her

So there 22K for me with a LONG way to go! ( guessing 7-10K more)

Bought my '64 for $16.5k. Convertible with hard top, had to put a new soft top on it. Overall car was in good to excellent shape except for the paint which is a bust. Options included hard top, 300hp/327, automatic, pwr str, brakes, windows. Original drive train in good shape, interior in excellent shape, body good except for paint. Frame and mechanics were all in good shape. Hope this helps, but your best bet is to look at as many as you can and get a feel for what $$ buys what. It's hard to picture in words. Good Luck

If you can get the car for $18.5k then the question is, after spending $5-7k for paint and interior, are you going to have a car that's worth about $24k? Assuming no big surprises, you are probably getting a fair deal - not a bargain, but not a ripoff either.

There are a couple things you didn't mention that bear further examination. The first is frame rust. If the frame is rusty then keep looking. The second is the suspension. You didn't mention the condition of the front and rear ends. If either end needs work it can be expensive. $1k plus for front and $3k plus for the rear if you do everything (brakes, trailing arms, half shafts, control arms, etc.).

Supposeedly no rust and mechancally sound. I can do the paint and interior work so my cost shouldn't be quite that high. The car was on Ebay and didn't make the reserve. Seller contacted me and offered it for $18,500. I initially agreed but shortly thereafter decided against it. The car s in Cali and I am in Louisiana and would have to purchase and have shipped without seeing it other than pics. I have bought and sold a couple oif Vettes on Ebay but didn't have the warm fuzzy feeling on this one.

Thanks for your help...

Well, based on that additional info it sounds like a pretty good deal, especially if it's originally a California car (the don't rust out here).

However, given that you can't go see it yourself and apparently there's nothing special about it, I'm not sure I would go for it either unless I REALLY had a jones for a non-matching '64 327 automatic. It's not a particularly desirable Corvette and will be harder to sell than matching/4-spd/non-'64 cars.

All the ones that do not like the 64 are ignorants....:D

...they do have there own special qualities...

I do like my 365 horse vert....and it´s still has got a nice interior over any 65 and above car ! :t

The 64 Corvette is a great car !! Some folks say the drum brakes are a downer however you dont have to worry about rotor runout with the drum brakes. I just dont understand people's opinion on the 64. All you have to do is listen to teh idle of a 365 HP car and you hooked.

Now I would think if you could get it for anything between 15k and 20k -- AND THERE IS NO RUST IN THE FRAME -- then I would buy it.

Easy there, tigers! I wasn't saying there is anything wrong with the '64s! All I was saying was that IF it is a basic, no-option '64 with a non-matching, non-hi-performance 327 and automatic transmission, it is going to be tougher to sell than something that's more unusual (FOR EXAMPLE, a 365hp motor, or Z06, or big tank, or whatever).

Don't shoot me, I love 'em all!

Well I just seen a 64 red convert at a show 3 weeks ago.the car was a KNOCK OUT I mean it was MINT actually not just MINT it was MINT MINT

the fellow just bought it and it was only 25,000.00

So there definatley are some real afordable cars out there.I did not did into weather it was a original motor,or weather it was date coded or not But the car was CLEAN AS A WHIP

Now as to what I always say.Buy the most car you can get even if it means saving for another year. Its cheaper to purchase a car then to build one.

I enjoy working and building them more then driving them so do as I say not as I do.

But unless you love to piddle with em purchase a perfectr mint, mint car.the car this guy had just purchased was a get in it and go type of car.Needed absolutely nothing but a driver and a tank of gas

I have said I do like working on my vette. I spend most evenings in th shop piddling on it and enjoy that. I think working on a vette is more a "love hate" relationship, though. Everything about it is a pain in the butt to work on, but it is satisfying when your done and driving it. I just changed out the a/c on mine yesterday even that was a challenge, but it is done. I agree, " buy as much as you can afford"; the deal on the '64 caught my attention. As I said, I later backed out. There will always be another deal.

Red '64 value

I think I saw the car you are talking about on ebay. Paint was very faded and the interior was in bad shape although the seller called it "presentable". I think it got to $19K with the reserve not being met.

If you want the car for a project then you should buy it if the frame and body are solid. If you want some return on your investment and place some type of value on your labor, then the price in my opinion is way too high. I would think $15K at the most. The interior parts will be very expensive. Based on what the body and interior looked like, I would think the entire drivetrain would need to be redone. When you are finished, you will have a car that is worth about $30K at the most.

If this car had some rare options, an unusual and/or documented history, it might be worth $18.5. For a little more money, you could buy a '64 in reasonable shape.

i agree. His reserve was $19,500. Top bid was around $17,500. He emailed me, snce I had asked numerous questiions via email during the bidding, and said he would take $18,500. Like I said, I backed out of the deal and have no regrets at this time. I really need to finish my '72 before taking on another one, but at the same time, I wouldn't pass up a "good" deal on another one.

Thanks for your help,

CS
