Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

A little help here guys ( Need a mid year!)

I guess I'm missing something here.. You want to be below 2500 right. Well I've got 3:70's with 215/70/15's and at 70mph I'm taching right around 3100. What's so wrong with that???? I ran it for three hours 180 miles at this no problems... Sure it burn't about a 1/10 of a quart of oil big deal.. Vigman aren't you afraid if you lower you're gear so much you'll have to burn the clutch everytime you have to get going at a stoplight??Dave

Vig,

Since you wanted a HotRod and weren’t interested in keeping anything original why not go with a newer transmission with built in overdrive or a separate overdrive unit?

With 3.07´s that would give you burn-out power and the hi-way RPMs you are looking for.

We drove the 63 with 3.07´s and W I D E ratio muncy coast to coast and from Hotlanta to New Orleans and if memory serves me right averaged a bit over 20 mpg. Of course that was in the age of ¨drive 55 and stay alive¨ and you know I would never exceed the posted speed limit. :L :L

Todays good news /Bad news ( and yesterday update)

Monday late afternoon.. I came home and was feelin Da fever..

I took the hard top off ( parked it on the 73 for now) and took my first topless drive in her.. It's a totally different car now...

I spent the rest of the afternoon buffing the old rubber marks off the paint..

The convertible top...YEECH.. it needs to be taken down to the skeleton.. metal sandblasted... repainted... then get a new top on her...

Tuesday ( Played Hookie from Workie)

Well I pulled the sender in the tank and cleaned everything.. put the new doughnut in. new fuel line.. taped up wiring for sender unit. PB blasted all the bumper hardware

But lo and behold that was only ONE of the fuel leaks... the pipe for fuel feed as it comes thru the sender plate LEAKS TOO!

*^^)*^*(^%^$#%#$(%%%)^)^T) ER!

And I have a leak @ the differential input shaft... Not bad.. but a leak none the less.

So Off ordering I go ( again )

The good news

Steerring box lubed.

Steering wheel recentered

One step at a time

You just get out there and do one little job.. then the next and so on.. you stop when YOU want.. If you HAVE to do it .. it becomes a chore.. and looses the attraction.. so you mentally shift into "putter" mode.. slow & steady.

Set easy goals..
today I will replace the left headlight...

and go do it

next day...

2 jobs etc etc..

But if you come out of the gate stating you will R&R the engine.. and be done by 5:00pm.. Don't touch ther car.. turn around and crack a beer.. and re think your attempt for a later day.

Works for me...

I did. :D But you are having too much fun. Need to spread it out more so you don't overload.

Here's the cure to your problems:

Burn the Honda as a sacrificial offering to the Corvette gods and you will have more time to play with the Corvette.

Tom

Well here's the problem with that

1)The 2 kids would go on strike limiting the amount of productivity on the 64.

2) Then I would loose the cash advantage of going to work for a week on $30.00 bucks instead of $75.00 bucks.

That's a chrome emblem a week for the 64!

LOL

New front bushings going in today

( having it done )

Did high speed tire balance yesterday.

Took car to car wash on lot ( hand wash)... that took about 3 years of stuff off.. but the car died@ the car wash...

NO POWER would not start.. no click.. no NADA

Traced it down to a loose bulk head connector.

1 wiggle and VROOM...

well that's another thing I have to do.

Rear end report.

60 mph= 2800 rpm

It still feels like I need another gear...

WAHHHH

:birth HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKEY :birth

Hope you got lots of plastic car toys or at least the day off.

Now, on the subject of that rear gear. I'm :confused . I thought you put in a 3.08. Did you count the teeth before you put it in or just go by the stamped codes? It should be 37 and 12. At 60 with 27.5 inch tires you should be turning 2258 rpm. 26.5 inch tires only speed it up about 108 rpm.

With 2800 rpm at 60 and a 27.5 tire you figure at 3.891 rear gear or with a 26.5 tire , a 3.681. Given the differences in tire manufacturer's specs I'm betting you have a 3.70 ring and pinion in that carrier. 37 and 10 tooth count.

For you to have 2800 rpm at 60 with a 3.08 you would have to have 22 inch tall tires. Probably somthing on a 12' rim off of a '70s Honda Civic. :L I think we need to varify the dash guages before proceeding. You need to connect an electric tach or even a dwell tach if you have one that has the scale high enough to watch while you are driving. Actually you can do this one parked. Rev the engine slowly to 3000 or so and compare the electric tach to the dash tach and note any differences. This will determine if the dash tach is fast and needs calibrated.

Now go for a drive with another car that has a known accurate speedo and have them run at 50, 60 and 70 and compare what your speedo says. If your guages are right you don't have a 3.08.

Something just doesn't figure out right here. With a 3.08 you should have a feeling that you can drive around town in 1st gear with 2nd somtimes and that you have to slip the clutch a little too much to get moving. Are you sure you remembered to shift into 4th? :L :L

Tom

Vig,
With the new rear, you must remember to replace the speedo gear in the transmission with the one that corresponds to the rear end ratio. Otherwise, your indicated speed vs rpm on the installed speedo/tach will always remain the same.
