Mine rattles too - especially at idle with the clutch out. A friend has an 01 Z06 and so does his. Doesn't bother me a bit. I LIKE the little (and big) reminders that this is a purpose-built sports car! I've seen this noise confirmed as normal in multiple threads on multiple sites.

Sitting at idle while stopped, I have the car in neutral with no pressure on the clutch pedal (as recommended by Chevy). No noise. Once engaged and putting in gear, just a little noise. While in gear and steady state driving, can't say I've noticed anything that would concern me.

Driven many a manual and drove my C4 with a ZF6 daily in LA for 3+ years, each system has its own little "noises." I wouldn't worry about it unless something extraordinary happens.

My 2004, when I shut it off when it's idleing in neutral, it sounds like something falls out from underneath it. It always freaks out my girlfriend. :) Then she always makes some comment like, "A chevy, eh?"

B-t--!

That part doesn't sound right. Does the car jolt when you shut it down? Is the noise coming from mid-vehicle or towards the rear? You said the Chevy dealer looked at it, right?

Sounds like that can sometimes indicate an engine mounting bolt or tranny mounting bolt is loose or missing. Did anyone check into that? I would hope that's not the case with a brand new ZO6, but you never know.....

I have an 03 roadster that does exactly the same thing. I glad to hear that it's a 'character trait' and not a flaw.

Hi bitmunger -

I do not have the rattling problem , I do get the rattle when I baby out the clutch from 1st - never any other time.

I was with a friend recently in his MN6 coupe. When I came back to his car he already was in it and had it running - it sounded like there was a loose ball-bearing being thrown about in his tranny!

I was like "Whattheheckisthat!!?"

He just said "oh , that's the marble in a can noise" and we went on down the road.

I have never heard this noise from my car on 31+k miles.

best regards -

Just another data point. If I lower the idle speed, I can get a sort of metallic slapping sound. I'd describe it as lateral play in a splined shaft. Perhaps a loose fit between the clutch spline and input shaft?

Is there any '03 ZO6 Owners that Do Not have a Noisy Clutch/Tranny. My '03 ZO6 has a Noisy Tranny. It sounds like there is extreme wear, it sounds and feels "sloppy" and makes more noise than any other car I've drove (except old worn out cars). Additionally, when I put my car in neutral, like at a stop lite, the car sounds like an old washing machine. The intensity of the noise varies and sounds like a clicking. I've had it in to the Dealer 2X and I am told this normal for the breed. However, before purchasing my current ride I test drove 2 other C5 ZO6 and did not experience the problem. Therefore, if there are other '03 ZO6 Owners that are not experiencing these problems; I need to hear from you! Please take a minute of your time and take this poll. I plan on taking a tough stance and pursue recourse if I do not get satisfaction.
I have an '03 Z03 and don't hear any noise in the tranny or in the rear end. I have about 9800 miles on the car. I drive with the windows open most of the time. I sometimes drive with and without the radio. The only noise I hear is the grinding it makes when I miss a shift. OUCH!;shrug That doesn't happen too often though. I recently got my car and haven't driven a stick in about ten years.

03 Z here 3000 miles I drive most of the time with the stereo off. I like to listen to the motor.
Its very quiet. In fact I was driving the other day and thinking about all the reviews I have read about the Z having alot of road noise, when I smiled and wondered what they were comparing it to some kind of luxury car? I do have one of those foam partions though. No clutch noise as of yet.

Lets hope the parts don't show up for sale on any forums or Ebay! Better check for mud.

Mine does exactly what other people have described. It is the loudest to my ears when I am stopped, in neutral, with the clutch out. When I depress the clutch pedal, the sound is greatly attenuated. I didn't hear it for a while, as I play the cd player most of the time. Now that I have identified the sound, it is more pronounced to my ear.

I have to remember that I bought a Corvette, not a Lexus. I will take the noise if it means that my car is nasty. While Corvettes are beautiful, their main purpose is performance.

Ditto and ditto again.

The "death rattle" is normal on Z06's. It is mainly caused by the design of the throw out bearing. It will sound worst in neutral with the clutch out when you shut the engine off. I believe the owners manual actually says to shut the engine down with the clutch depressed.

...I believe the owners manual actually says to shut the engine down with the clutch depressed.

You are correct, sir! :) And add to this that I've been similarly advised by our resident Corvette maintenance guru, C4C5Specialist on a couple of occasions. Keep the clutch depressed you shut the engine off.

After reading this thread, I drove our Z06 today. Turned down the radio and didn't notice any noise. Have almost 18,000 miles. Maybe we're just lucky.

I don't have a Z06, but I do hear what sounds like marbles in a coffee can when I start out in 1st and it is cold. I thought it might be the catalytic converter guts comming loose. After the car heats up, its a lot quieter and doesn't rattle at all in neutral. - Ron

Some extra sound insulation does work over the tunnel and attenuates the noise dramatically. The noise has been deemed inherent of all C5's from what I've seen. They even talk about the noise in the GM video you receive with your car showing how it sounds outside the car and not to be concerned :eek lol!

Hello,
i did get a 2003 C5, Z06 here in Germany from a State Department Employee.
Since about 10.000 mls there was also a noise. But it appeared first only on acceleration and later stayed on all the time.
We did take the whole tranny apart and figured out, that the last bearing of the torque-tube, to the transmission was going bad.
That was anly one of the noise, that came from there.
The other clutch-noise was a safety-ring, that holds the throw-out-bearing in place. That ring was freely moving on the shaft.
After replacing the throw-out-bearing assembly, that noise is gone also.
That was this noise, that appeared by shutting down the engine without hitting the clutch. With the clutch down, the noise doesn´t appear.

Mine is a Z-51 and not a Z06!!!! But after the First 1000 miles, it Sounds like someone Shaking a Box of Rocks!!!!!!!!:upthumbs

is there any aftermarket parts - mostly talking about a new clutch - that helps this problem?
