Edelbrock manifold/Stock Hood??

Gents, in the ongoing saga of the 81 rebuild 350/383 story, I was wondering if someone could supply me with some info.
As I pick parts for the rebuild, I chose an Edelbrock RPM air gap manifold, part number 7516. The edelbrock page states "will not fit under a stock corvette hood". Now my dilema, I REALLY want this intake as it matches the 750CFM carb I want. What modifications are needed to make this fit? New hood?? If so what type and who makes it. This is the main reason I'm doing the motor before the body, I was afraid of this kind of stuff. I really wanted the car to "look" stock but am willing to mod the hood or purchase a new one, not really but don't have much choice. Anyone dealt with this issue??

There are some drop-base air cleaners that allow your manifold/carb selection to work under your stock hood.

The base of the air cleaner sits on top of the carb, but then drops down towards the outer edge so that after you put the element on, the top of the air cleaner sits lower than a standard air cleaners. There are several brands that offer this type of air cleaner - you can look at Jeg's or Summit.

I put on a RPM air gap about a month ago. You will need a drop down base. See the above links. I used the GM version. The hood will close, but to make it close better, i bubbafied the cleaner lid with the bottom of my shoe to knock down the dome in the middle of the lid.

Personally, i think i'm going to go with something like this one below. Its a 2in tall filter with a filter top.:cool Or i might go with a drop base, w/2.5 in filter and an extreme lid from K&N

81 are you concerned about any air flow restriction with the setup you mentioned. If I put a 750 CFM carb on there.........I SURE AS heck don't want to restrict the air flow. I looked into the stinger hoods and don't like the looks at all, so the info you supplied is very helpful in keeping the car looking stock.

which set up? I think with a 3in cleaner on a drop base, it should be fine. But thats part of the reason i like the set up in teh pic above. The filter on top should make up for any loss flow from using a shorter (2in) filter.

You might also be able to stay with the drop base and 3in filter and put a extreme flow on top of that.

just a side note. I'm only running a 625 demon on a 350, so air flow isn't quite as important for me as it will be for you.

I haven't played with my C3 (an '82 Cross-Fire), but in SOME cases (as stated above), the drop-base provides space by lowering the top downward, constricting air-flow to the carb, which'll only screw-up gains the intake may provide.
I've seen, and REALLY like, a few C3s with ECKLERS 'stinger' C3-hood, because it still 'looks' like a Corvette, but i'm notsure if it provides much (if any) extra clearence under the hood.

I also recall a guy who 'grafted' the stinger-scoop onto his original hood, providing plenty of room...

The Vanacor stinger hood provides about 1 3/4" extra clearance. I would assume that the Eckler's stinger is similar in size.

Something I've seen that seemed interesting, but I have never personally tried, is this. I was thinking that some of the clearance issues on some car/intake combinations could be eliminated by using a small air box with a drop base and no filter, then using remote-mounted cone filters. By remote-mounting the filters, larger elements could be used, without clearance problems.

I have 81 with Edelbrock 3701 intake manifold, Holly 4160 0-805085 and KN 60-1400 air filter. Manifold maybe different, but what I have all fits under standard hood.

I have the AirGap intake and matching carb on my 81 and did originally manage to get the hood closed with a drop base and a very thin filter but it just didn`t go well, in my case it was just to thin. and the engine could`t get enough air. Surprisingly it was loosing about 20hp when it was on the rolling road with the filter on.

I just went through this. I have a small block hood and engine. I went with the RPM intake, HOLLEY 770 Street Avenger carb. A 1970 model big block air cleaner fits like a glove. Paragon part # 1008k I believe is correct. It comes with a 2 !/2 in. filter.
I have over an inch of clearance.
