Installing Poly Mount Bushings on Steering Rack

I just got a set of Poly bushings for my 1986 Coupe. Any hints on installing the Steering rack bushings? It looks like you have to remove a tie rod end and the dust boot from the passenger side to slip the ring mount into position. Has anyone just put a slit in the mount and slipped it over the rack to install? Looks like it would be captured under the retaining ring and shouldn't be a problem. Anyone tried this approach?
