According to the Atlanta Motor Speedway web site the Winston Cup car record is 197.478 MPH and the Busch qualifying record is 191.661 MPH. That is with no interference with other racers and with full race prepared cars.

I had a better feeling about this speed after I saw a pic and post from Sam Bryant after the Nebraska Open Road where after the car finished dancing through the shrubbery, both driver and navigator opened the doors and were able to walk away.

That's part of the cost of racing. It's nice to know that it is possible to go through that kind of wreck and open the doors and walk away.

That's a great article Ken, and very informative. It does assume that if you want to go 200 you want to do it in a open road race. I posted an alternative point of view in that thread. I've always had a little salt in my blood.

i had serious doubts about this. someone said the fastest lap for a busch car is 191 mph and i believe they got around 600 hp. Cup cars average 750 hp. only thing different really is compression ratio busch at 9.5:1 and cup 12:1 it's amazing that a stock vette can go this fast.....sorry i seriously doubt it unless your running over 600 hp and on slicks cause no stock tire would hold in the turns without washing your LT4 vette right into the wall.

it just amazes me what some will say to impress others if it takes everything it got for a busch car to hit 191 mph what makes you think your 330+ LT4 could?

191? Kind of surprised we fell for that, but then again, I'm new to all of this. It would be interesting to see what a really stock LT-4 could do on a oval like Atlanta. Is there any one out there that would have verified results from something like that?

whats the average speed for iroc cars there? 165mph or so? these cars are managed at around 450 hp topping out at 180 mph. so it's hard to imagine an LT4 stock vette can achieve 191 mph. i seriously DOUBT it
