Here are a few pics of my '81 radio. I think the radio is original (AM-FM with cassette) but I doubt the knobs are. Could someone confirm that?.
A pic would be very appreciated.
Regards.
Roger :)

Those knobs look just like mine on my 79. Not sure for an 81. I think they are different.

Here's a picture of my original radio out of my '81. Hope this helps!!

Don't think it's original. In 79-80 that style cassette was used in the Corvette, but with black pushbuttons(and different knobs than those pictured). Pretty much all GM cars used it too, up into the early 80s.
In 1981, all optional Corvette radios were the etr style, like pic'd in Emtmike's photo.
Do you have the oil temp gauge in your center cluster or a clock? If you have a clock your 81 most likely came with the standard AM/FM and someone changed it out for the cassette. If oil temp, you had one of the optional radios, but not the one pictured.
There's always a bunch of em on ebay.

Mkapp is correct. That is not an original AM/FM-cassette for an '81. That picture of Emtmike's unit is correct right down to the characteristic tilt. Every '81 unit I've seen looks like it is just ever so crooked. Mine included.

Damn, I was thinking. YES this is my moment to help Roger for a change! But I don't have a original radio... So I hope to help you next time :)

Thank you so much for your quick replies, guys. Well you sure cleared up a few things.

First, Emtmike, thanks for your pic. By the looks of yours, mine is not original. Good to see what it should look like.

mkapp7879: according to build sheet, car came with option UM6, witch is AM-FM stereo with cassette. (non ETR). Car also had a clock.

Final story is, PO had a different radio (Pioneer) in the car when he sold it. I guess he tried to make it look somewhat original before selling. Electric antenna was no longer there and a oil temperature gage is now in place of the clock.

Oh well....so much for originality !
Thank you all once again....

Regards,
Roger

Always glad to help out, even if it means disappointing somebody. When I changed my stereo last year, I decided to keep my original one and bezel in case I ever sold my '81. Hope you can find an original one for a good price :thumb.

According to the Black Book, UM6 is AM/FM Radio, etr stereo with cassette which should have included the oil temp gauge from the factory.

Thanks for clarifying that mkapp7879. I guess I should get myself a black book also. At least, the oil temp gage is there.
Thanks again...

Roger
