Rear end noise - bearings perhaps?

You guys make me raugh! ;LOL

I'll check out that "snubber" or "snugger" bushing too - I didn't replace that. I'm all excited now - next weekend I have more possibilities! :cool

Was it one of those guys with a spray bottle & a squeegee?:D I guess he figured us vette owners are filthy rich:L

No squegee, but his parting words were "Don't give up the Vette" He got the 61 cents that I had left. I'm a sucker fo Vette lovers.;)

This might sound goofy, but, if one (or more) of your wheels aren't on tight enough, it will make a pretty loud sound. Especially when you are stopped and start to move either forward or back and also when you turn the wheel. Check the lug nuts with a torque and see what you have. Good Luck.

I'll certainly look at that too - there has been so many times in the past with these darn vehicles that it was the obvious. We always want to complicate things!

And if the wheels are OVERtorqued, you ruin the bearings, etc. much quicker.I think the torque might be around 100 lbs,& some places put the gun on them to around 200-300:(

If you had no problem until after the rearend rebuild it leads me to believe they got the backlash wrong on the gears. with the driveshaft disconnected from the rear end, turn the pinion shaft back and forth, if the slop is more than just a few degrees, it could very well be excessive backlash. under heavy acceleration, excessive backlash can destroy the rearend.

Wouldn't it feel "sloppy" and not smooth if that were the case? The car rides so unbelievably smooth, even under acceleration, you hardly even know its rolling. It is making the clunk primarily during right hand turns or going from drive to reverse.....

Even with excessive backlash, you would not necessarily feel anything unusual except the clunk going in and out of gear or immediately upon deceleration or acceleration or going from forward to reverse. Basically with too much backlash the pinion gear teeth are engaging the ring gear too high up on the ring gear instead of putting the load on the center of the ring teeth where the gears are thicker. The clunk is generated when the load on the pinion is transferred from the leading side of the ring gear teeth to the trailing side. Sort of hard to explain, but if you were coasting (load is on the trailing side) then blip the throttle and let off (the load goes to leading side ..........clunk then immediately upon release of throttle the load shifts back and clunk again. When you a sitting still with foot on brake and shift from forward to reverse, you transfer the pinion loads the same way.

AS far as clunk when you turn, it could be the posi clutch pack hanging up. I have heard that using the wrong rear end lube or not using the GM additive will cause this problem.

OK I'll shut up. Just tryin to help.

No! This is good stuff. I have rebuilt conventional 12-bolt rearends - so I know what you are talking about. But this shop knows their stuff and I have a hard time believing they misaligned things. Someone else mentioned the GM additive and although I thought I had done that perhaps I fupad there so I am going to drain and refill just in case.

Thanks a bunch!!!! Really appreciate it!

Well.I havent done anything in the rear end yet but change fluid,& the snubber,& the new wheel bearings,& the spicer u-joints,& I know the right stuffs in there(additive).I hope theres enough of it in there, though. And I wont even attempt a rebuild of it myself because I dont have the knowledge or a knowledgable person to look over my shoulder thats available to me,unfortunately.Just the mechanic I use that works 98% on vettes. He's in my Corvette Club, but that dont mean I get labor half price:cry Dawn, sounds like you'll get to the bottom of this before I will...I have limited funds, experience, & workspace...so I'm curious as to what your conclusion will be.:D

Let me know how you make out. Curtis just described the two problems that I have too. I have heard it for so long I guess I just got used to it. First, clunk when the rpms's are high into gear, then clunk when I go round a corner and it pulls to one side until I blip the throttle, then clunk and it straightens out.
This is good stuff! Expensive, but good.
I used some Pennzoil LSD (limited Slip Differential)(not the drug) lube in my diff. when I replaced the pinion seal. So I may have messed up the backlash and used the wrong lube to boot.
Keep it coming Curtis!:)

Pete.

-often just a sign of old-age...

-some Vette-owners who jog a lot do complain of loose rear-end joints, so you might just be ripe for hip-implants; --i believe "extra-virgin"Olive-oil is the best to help get rid of the clunk, ---but better see an MD rather than a Mechanic...! ~Helpful Harry :confused

I think your messed up....if you got a loose rear end, then extra-virgin has nothing to do with YOUR problem!;LOL
