Read an article on Yahoo about thieves stealing cars, cloning a legitimate VIN from an identical vehicle in another state or Canada, and selling the stolen car as that legitimate car. Apparently automakers have several (secret) places on a car that the correct VIN can be found. Anybody know where these places are on the C-4?

I know where some of these locations are and I am sure many others on this site know also, but I hope that information is not revealed here by anyone.

I would agree with Whisperer, why give those kind of people an easy opportunity like that. Since this website is free for anyone to browse. If anyone wants to tell, just send him a Private Message.

Believe me my friends...Professional car thiefs already know.

They sure do!

I think there are 13 spots where the VIN is located.

Granted they probably already know, but let's not help those who don't!

Back in the 60's bodyshops would buy wrecked Corvettes from insurance companies, change one VIN number onto a stolen Vette and sell it.

I know this because the bodyshop owner who did bodywork on my '68-coupe, back around 1970, did it and got caught. He went from doing bodywork to making license plates, wearing red and white stripes.

There was allot of that stuff back then, now its more difficult to commit fraud.

I have five, very-unsecret places for my VIN. It is etched into every piece of glass on the car, including the top, which is not technically glass, and took some sharp knife work to complete.

I did it all with a glass stencilling kit to discourage thieves. Cost, back then: about $11.00.

Similar, found today: http://www.etch-o-matic.biz/vin-etching/ (One of many, and I am not affiliated with any of them.)

YES, YOU ARE CORRECT. I HAVE A BOOK AROUND HERE SOMEWHERE THAT SHOWS FOR THE MOST PART WHERE THEY ARE LOCATED (I AM FORMER LAW ENFORCEMENT).

I don't think these locations are any secret. You can go online and find them. You can go to your local bookstore and find a criminal investigation book that will tell you where they are.

VIN location doesn't worry me. If someone stole my car, they'd have to kidnap a mechanic to take with! :L
Ya and with mine they would have to take the roll back to take it anywhere.......Mike R
