sort of stumble at idle

Shaaa Zaaam.............. I've been to 3 County Fairs and 1 Goat Screwing, and never seen anything like this!!:boogie:boogie:boogie

But it's plain to me from the photos that Toms Cap probably had a cold casting and was arcing somewhat from the coil to #5 from the GET GO and was getting ready to start arcing to #3 and #7!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

Tom,you need to get in touch with your parts man and have it replaced or your $$$ back!!:thumb

No 2 Opti however,Is clearly technicians error!! It's plain that it wasn't aliened properly and forced onto the engine with the bolts and pushed it's guts clear up against the cap!!(Circular drag marks on cap, white plastic sensor cover and bowed back degree wheel!!):thumb:thumb:thumb

There is no reason to have to force a Opti,if aligned properly it will just slip right down in place!!:thumb

Steve40th,You need to take your Technician out to the North Shore and show him "The Green Room" without a Board!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

These things are notorious for carbon arcing. If you have an MSD type box on it it is even worse. They were a great design, just not executed well, especially the 92-94 LT1's. The 95and on LTx engines received a better design, and little vacuum lines to assist in the other issue of moisture within the Opti.

Steve, the MSD unit has hoses that you retro-fit so that it is fully vented. It is quite ingenious how they do it. BTW, I don't have the MSD ignition box as I've heard they can cause issues.

We got to the NS quite a bit. But, due to 100 plus an hour rates here, I have been my own technician for many many years. I have been dealing with LT1 issues since I first hosed the engine down in 1996, and BAM, no worky worky. Trust me on the 92-94 Optis, you can put those in wrong, as it has been done as the splines are so small, people will force themin. The 95-97 have been installed wrong too, which utterly amazes me. Aftermarket cams and the dowel pin can cause havic and break optis if not measured to ensure they are not going to far into the OPTI.
Over time you realize allot of stuff. Go to the corvetteforum, and you will see I am kneed deep into this stuff.

I installed an Accel 300+ ignition box when my Vette was about two years old (1998). In 2006, I removed the cap & rotor because I was having a slight miss from 0-6400 RPMs. My Vette had about 90,000 miles at the time. All I found were the two rotor screws sitting in the bottom of the distributor. My cap had a normal amount of wear on each contact. I installed an Accel cap & rotor kit. I also made sure to tighten those iddy-biddy screws enough. No problems since.

I am not so sure that all high voltage ignition boxes have the same effect on the Optispark components.

Carry on!

Yee Ha

I found another cracked plug by watching the plugs in the dark last night. The plug has been replaced and I have driven the car about 10miles without the first hiccup. It idles good at stop lights and has good throttle response.

Thanks to all of you who gave me suggestions and help on this problem. I believe that I had multiple issues and one by one when fixed the type of miss changed until I finally resolved all the problems some of which I may have caused but so be it If I don't try how can I know if I am able to keep it running without letting it eat me up in the pocket book. During this process I was able to repair the EGR but only after three tries because I just refused to part with the price of a new one. Or because I am retired living on S/S. I have decided to live my life to the fullest and that includes having a Corvette to punch the throttle on occasionally.:Steer

LT4 man, I think MSD has problems due to multiple sparks etc up to around 3000rpm, so that may attribute to the carbon tracking I saw, as no one ran ACCELLs other than some f body guys within my group of people.
Anyways, those two screws are issues, and loctite is your friend for those

I made sure the mechanic who did my opti change used loctite on the rotor screws, he said I hope you never have to take that cap off. ;LOL

Make sure and only use the Blue Loctite, the red is considered permenant.

Not sure what color he used, but it's a done deal now. What ever happens, happens at this point.

All right a kind of final wrap up for my issue. The better half and I took the Vette on a trip back to central Kansas this weekend (to her folks). The car ran flawlessly (except for not letting it warm up this morning before we left, it coughed a couple of times). The gas mileage is back to where I felt it should be (almost 26 mpg and leaning on it hard a few times :D). I got it home and on the lift, took a look see and the oil leak is all but gone. I think that we have it fixed. :thumb

Great news!!

The opti on mine was installed before I bought it and only has 900 miles on it. Maybe mine is having the same problem...

The MPG avg on mine is in the low teen's and never goes past 18mpg on the highway. :(

I'd sure check out the opti "New" doesn't necessarily mean "Working Right". I'm a classic example of that.

Sounds like your Vette has some issues.

I would start a new thread so everyone here could give you advice on what to check.

I will be looking for that! :upthumbs

Gregory he does have his own thread going his issues are very similar to what I was experiencing.

Very cool. Now can he get his Vette over to your mechanic? :L

WHILE HE IS THERE, DON'T FORGET TO SAVE THE :w
