Hi all,
I did a search and found a post from 2003. There was a guy who switched his 1971 from the stock solid aluminum mounts to rubber mounts, which GM started in 1973. He said the ride was much better. Apparently it raises the car about a 3/8" or so. I could live with that.
My stock aluminum...
I ended up using rust encapsalator as the primer. About a quart and a half of this stuff. Extreme chassis black, 2 quarts. This painted a lot of the suspension parts also. I put on about 1 coat of rust encapsalator and 2-3 coats of paint. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate it a 9. Very close to...
Will just a spindle knocker get the spindle out? How hard do u have to hit it and with a small sledge hammer?
I purchased a tool kit a few years back in anticipation of rebuilding my arms. Well, that time is here. It came with a spindle press. I have heard that using this tool sometimes breaks...
I would go with a hydraulic roller, that way u don't ever have to worry about breaking it. The lifters get a little expensive, but sometimes there are good deals to be had on ebay. I have seen hydraulic roller kits go for around $500 at times. The lifters u need have the link bar connecting them...
Today's big block heads flow a lot better than the heads from the 60's. That is why u can still make big power without having higher compression.
With good heads, the camshaft becomes more important. One thing u have to watch out for with a higher lift camshaft is piston to valve clearance...
Compression is way too high, especially with those very heavy iron heads u will need race gas:ohnoes Your going to have to get that compression down somehow...pistons, heads, head gaskets. Yep, I was going to go with stock LS6 heads on my 540 build but changed my mind. I ended up getting some...
Have u calculated your final compression ratio?
This is a big influence on the cam choice and how detonation sensitive it is. With iron heads, this limits your compression to around 9:1. With aluminum heads it is around 10:1 because they shed heat faster than iron.
The biggest factor in making...
You can use Eastwood extreme chassis black satin. I ended up using the regular gloss black. I love that paint, easy to apply and tough as nails. Same thing for rust encapsulator, I used this as a primer, great stuff. :thumb
Hello guys,
I am thinking about possibly doing efi on my 540 big block build. Is it worth the hassle, I don't know at this point, what do you all think?
My car is currently undergoing a frame-off, so everything is disassembled at this point.
The biggest question I have is what has to be done to...
Perhaps u can run a custom line without taking the body off, because taking the body off is a very big deal...
I say run your own lines, either braided hose or aluminum tubing. Cut the old steel one out in pieces.
My car did the same thing and I have manual steering, so that leads me to believe it is not due to your power steering. Upon front end teardown I found the lower ball joints to be severly worn, the upper ones were fine. If u see rivets holding on the ball joints, that probably means they have...
Ya I just pulled my 350 motor and 4 spd muncie trans out not too long ago. From what I recall, I was able to remove the shifter and mount from the crossmember and it wasn't all that hard. I know I unbolted that pesky reverse cable off the trans and where it attaches into the firewall, it won't...
Yep, torque does rule, thats why I wanted a big motor..
I say if your going with a 427 or larger, build a big block engine. The parts are way more heavy duty and will last longer.
The 2 big disadvantages are weight and miles per gallon....but mgp could be improved with some tuning.
I know with...
I have the red poly bushings on my '94 Z28. They are the ones without polygraphite in them. The black ones are better for the street, I chose these for my corvette but have yet to try them out yet as my car is going thru a frame-off resto.. One good advantage of the poly is they are more durable...
I had my frame sand-blasted, then I made sure to get all the sand out, re-welded the frame, coated/primed it with rust encapsalator and then put 3 coats of eastwood extreme chassis black on after that. It came out awesome. Eastwood products are very high quality. I believe the new 2K was meant...
I am going to be putting in a 540 solid roller in my 1970 and have done a ton of research so far. Most of it has to do with the drivetrain, the motor is the easy part. The 502 is very similar to my engine, with a shorter stoke of 4.0", it will be a very nice engine in your corvette. If u run an...
Thanks Mike, I forgot to mention that the radiator support I have is original to the car and is in very good condition, so I want to reuse it. I believe the big block support has wider bottom brackets and will not work with my griffin radiator. Well is there any reason a small block shroud would...
I went with KYB GR2's. Haven't put them on yet, but I figure they are so cheap if I don't like em, will go with Bilsteins. My other suspension parts are pretty much stock, gm springs, a-arms, etc. But, I opted for the poly bushings for their durability. I had installed the red ones in my other...
Make sure u replace the valve springs, they are such an important part of the equation..All's it takes is 1 bad spring and the engine will not run right. Unless the springs are relatively new (few thousand miles or less), change em out. Comp cams has a nice program u can download for free on...
