Hey fellow Shark owners,Sorry to but in on the post.I`m also in the process of buying a new engine.I found a 383 Stroker for $2095.I`m also considering a Crate from GM performance products it`s a 350 cubic in 330hp,at 5000rpm.380ft.lbs of torque at 3800rpm. This one goes for about $2400.
What engine would be better for my car? I`m just looking for a fun ride with good street usable horsepower.Reliability is important too.

Sounds like either one would be fine. It would be more fun to bench race and brag about the 383. Plenty of torque, and plenty of go power with inexpensive bolt on mods.

I`m also looking at adding a Edelbrock Performer Carb. which the shop quoted 370-390hp.for the 383 Stroker. They told me it would be legal out in Cali. I have to make sure of that.Otherwise I`ll just use my current carb.
I checked out Edelbrock engines and man their expensive! $4800 for a 350/320hp. Does anyone know why their so much more?

And while you answer that carburator question...

Everyone,

speaking of carburators; what do you think of Road Demon or Race Demon carbs? Is the Road Demon 795 configured like a Q-jet?

BigBrakeFuelie,

If you like lots of midrange and low end torque, and it sounds like you do, the 383 or 400 are KINGS. The extra crank arm length not only add cubes but also add torque via mechanical advantage.

The 383 adds seat of the pants that starts making a few riders think there must be a big block under the hood. There's nothing like "guts" in a street car.

Good luck,

I would keep the overlap down if using a Q-Jet and your 3.08 gears.

If you were to compare the 180 runner Iron Lightnings from Protopline to the AFR 190 I think you would see the best bang for the buck @ $ 799 and free shipping.

With that combo you could use the Crane 272 Powermax cam with 1.6 rockers to take advantage of the great low lift flow of those heads and use a + 100 long pushrod. That 112 LCA of the came will give a broader power range that the Comp 270

That would get the job done pretty well

It would be best to Zero deck the block for some added squeeze" quench"

Have fun!

" FC3 " First off want to say thats a nice 72 roadster ya got there.:beer been reading throu your post and think everything I read might gest be over kill for what you want out of your vette acording to the post you made on 10-06. the parts that you have aquired thus far for a 383 stroker are a good start for a 1/4 bracket drag car. they will give you knight mares on the street and if your wife has to drive it she wil tell folks that you suffer from young mail motcho isuess desese :J ? unless you would like to go through the prosees of building a engine by your self it is not econmicly wize to engineer and build one your self. there are to maney realy good crate motors on the market and all the engeneering has been done . take the 383 Vortic truck motor that is being offerd by GM put a 750 holley with vacume secondarys and some Hooker super comp headers, keep the 308'S and opp for a 700R4 with a 2800 stall tork converter and keep the lockup . from stop light to stop light the 5.0 stangs and Lt1 comeros won't be abel to out pull the torqe of the 383 roller moter once you get your foot out of it to hook up your tires becase with the 2800 stall it will break the tires at will. If your getting on the freeway and you want to put the hammer down and you have the fotatude to ceep the pedal on the floor the 700 will shift down, on its way to a lowergear it will lett the engine rev to about 47-4800 and bang into gear. it will be all you can do at this point to ceep your back tires from passing the front ones. as far as top speed goes with the over drive and lock up i bet you won't want to go that fast in a 72 vette roadster even with the top on. and you could expect to get 18 to 20 mpg out of it. now you won't beat Waren Jhonston in the 1/4 but you will get respect and yor wife will like to drive it. so put that stroker kit on Ebay and build your self a modern rod .;) K

Mrs S. I did find out how to attach a low res photo. Thanks Fred.

Fred,

Come up to Garland sometime and I'll show you the AFR heads and the AirGap intake. You can take measurements for clearance. I'll give a ride in the '64 to show you the effects of a big cam and it's unfriendly nature.
Chris,
I don't dislike ALL Edelbrock products. I think they make great wingnuts. Just kidding. I don't like their cams.

Mike

Fred.
If you go to take a ride in tha '64 take a whole sack full of grins and your gas money with you. :D

:J Enjoy :J

Aw come on Tom, it doesn't get that bad gas milage. I had to stop only seven times for gas on the way to Bowing Green.

383 in 81

i just bought an 81 with a 383 in it , this thing is a blast to drive. it has federal mogal forged pistion.performer rpm 64cc aluminum heads comp.cam exterme energy grind 274 with roller rocker and lifters, 1.5 s making it about 489 lift and about 234 duration . a weiand stealth intake, a 750 holley , hooker headers, and a set of flowmasters. it has a tci trans with a 2.75 first gear, some kind of street stall converter form tci. and alot of nice aluminum on the outside . i have to run converters . i don t know where i am going to put them under the car. but this vette will fly, ive had big blocks and a few other vettes but i think this one is the most fun one to drive i've owned george

Fred,
i was just checking back with you on how things are going. i assume that all is well, but give us an update if you have a chance, Brian

383 saga

Brian, I finally got a virgin 350, 4 bolt, 010, block. The machinist has bored it .030 and I just got it today!!! We are putting the pistons(fed mogul flattops), rods(eagle"SIR"), and crank in (Eagle 4340 forged balanced) and will take back to machinist next week to deck the block. Looks like AFR 190's, roller (crane), performer RPM, Q-jet. Fred.:beer

Hey fc3

just a note on my hood with the performer RPM.

I don't have that padding that is placed under the hood to protect if from the heat. I noticed that the other day when I was putting the hood back on my car.

I am going to do that puddy experiment this weekend, I'll keep you posted.

Fred,
sounds great!! i am glad you are going for the AFR's, they will do your set-up justice, and look great doing it! all 4340 rotating assembly will also give you the highest durability. great score on the 010 block, they can be a pain to find at times. have fun with it, you almost have me sucked into my next motor project, Brian

Hey Guys, The fun begins!!!! Got the block cleaned up after boring. Put the crank in to check for clearance. The SIR rods DON'T clear the block. Sooo, time to get the air grinder out. Looks like small base circle roller cam shaft as well. I'll post the progress over the build. Maybe photo's if I can figure out how to take photos with my camera at 65k bytes or less for attachment. Fred.:dance

Hey Fred,

Does your camera have an email mode? When I take pics in email mode they are the perfect size for attachments to forums.

Tom

Can you see the small base circle cam? It clears the rods!!!:bang
