Dodge looks set to raise the stakes in the inter-Motown battle for sports car supremacy. The powerful (yet ultimately crude) Dodge Viper SRT10 has taken a back seat to Chevrolet’s high-value Corvette Z06 by most accounts, but the DCX boys aren’t taking their cross-town rival’s threat lying down.

No, they’re set to unveil the 2008 Viper SRT10 in Detroit, which looks quite similar to the current model sporting a vented hood for better breathing. The new Viper packs an elephantine 8.4-liter aluminum V-10 engine that give 600 horsepower (+90) and 560 pound-feet of torque. So fortified, the big snake can now rip to 60 miles-per-hour in under 4 seconds, while meeting federal Tier 2, Bin 5 and California LEV requirements.

Two things...
1) I don't know if this was proper forum for this post. Feel free to move at will
2) Is there any irony here given the source of the article??? :D

The Blue Devil will beat it up and steal it's lunch money. The fact that they "announced" first only means they are running scared.

The Vette has the diaper beat in looks, handling and build quality already. The current Z06 beats the current dodge. The new Z07/Stingray/Blue Devil will continue the trend.

Just my 2 bits. ;)

THATS IT???????
:rotfl
Oh well, the one thing that this does it keep the horsepower wars alive and kicking.
Now, if they can only plant the power.:L
Allthebest, :hb

The top picture on that page looks like a modified Sebring convertible. :L
The bottom picture of the engine bay sure does invoke a Ferrari resemblance!

Man oh man, we live in fun times!
Can you imagine having one of these 5-600 HP cars when we were 16?
I wrecked enough cars back then anyway....

Power

C4C5specialist hit the nail right on the head; to get all that power to the ground especially if the pavement is damp is the real trick. The tires are already as fat as your average American couch potato, & most people can't launch or handle a standard vette, yet alone a supercharged one off the line at speed without slurring the rear end all over the place.:lou I think I see an all wheel drive Corvette in the future if these horse power wars continue.:W

I wouldn't count on that due to the inherent weight gains and 'parasitic loss' incurred. The additional components would seem to negate some of the HP/Tq increases. I'd expect to see more Traction Control added.
My 2¢ :D

10 Cyl Viper / 8 Cyl Vette

Ya know, everything they do with the Viper uses a V-10, so the current Viper ( 500 cu. in., 500 hp, 500 ft.Lb.) goes after the Z-06 with it's 505 hp 427 SMALL BLOCK V-8. If Chevy goes wild with a new big block, what size will that be and what kind of power would be expected? How many more ALMS championships would the C7.R take? What would Dodge do then, buy Bugatti from Volkswagen to compete?

Changes

I've got a feeling that they might put a turbo on the LS2 or maybe a supercharger. But not on the 7 liter motor. How many Dodges do you see at La Mans? Zip, Nada, None.

But the Z06 is still quicker than the rest.

I hear they are only gonna build about 1500 of them at around $100k.

I am talking about the current Z06 v/s Viper. Yes the SS Blue devil will only be 1000-2000 a year and expect $100000+. The 07 Z06 can out run & out handle the Viper now & a few more HP wont help much. Probably will see a HP increase on the 08- 09 Z06 to combat the Viper. The SS is in a completely different class compaired to the Viper.

Thank God that the Dodge boys keep improving the Viper. That keeps the GM boys on their game to stay ahead and we are the beneficiaries. :D

Nordschleife!

Take it to the Nordschleife like the Vette guys did: 7min 44 sec lap! Will the Viper make it? Has the Ford "GT" even seen that track?

Viper

It's still a Dodge. The quality just isn't there.

I was never that impressed by the Viper, its got an engine that can barely compete with the Vette even with an over 2 L displacement advantage.

I got nothing against a Viper, i wanted one at one point, but its still just a complete brute with a truck engine and bad traction. The Viper doesnt help to disprove the myth that American cars are just big engines with nothing else.

600hp at 8.4L is really nothing impressive.

I think that's definitely changing since the merger with Daimler. There's more and more Mercedes underpinnings being found in Chrysler products now, which I believe is upping the overall quality of the American lines.

Hmmm..it's been a while since I've studied up on the Viper, but last I recall it dominated ALMS and it wasn't until it's departure that Corvette Racing finally started winning all the events. And in terms of the factory street car, it bests the (non-C6 Z06) vette in almost, if not every performance category. But the driver comfort is extraordinarily harsh! But that is almost expected or tolerated when you are buying a factory streetable racecar. (Again, the Z06 being a perfect exception to that.)

Horse Power

How about 300HP in a 2.5 liter opposed 4, see my avitar.
