Fuel loading when hot

Bob, didn't you tell me about a year ago "YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH POWER":crazy ?

Gerry

That's when I thought those big rear tires would hold. ;) I'm not gonna run wrinkle-walls on the street. :rotfl

You need to go to the SummitJegs Website!!! Great deal on K&N filter tops. Just use Promo Code VNV. :D

Now Mark. Didn't you like the 9" filter top that I cut into the top of my custom fab'd tripower air cleaner top? Sits right over the center carb.

OK, so even if they DON'T flow all that well, reducing vacuum in the air cleaner housing is a good thing.

So, when's the K&N demo party at your house? ;LOL

Well, I just found approximately 30 additional by-the-seat-of-your-pants horsepower, and when you're starting where I'm starting, that's kinda neat. ;)

Now, I'm inclined to tell you where I found it (at no extra cost by the way), but then VNV would see how I did it. ;LOL

I headed out of town today to try it out, and wow!!! :eek

Ok..What's goen on here..are you in Cahoot's with The Kid..??

And Did you cut open the back end of your hood? ..30HP....??? Where???:crazy

Okay, okay, VNV......don't be havin' a gizzard attack. :rotfl

Twice since I thought the problem was solved, the engine up and died 50 feet from where I fired it up after a 1/2 hour shut down. Engine still warm, but certainly not hot.

Since tightening up the intake bolts, there's been no more smokey exhaust after it re-fires, but why the stalling problem? I began to wonder about the air part of the air/fuel mixture. "Hmmmmm", says me, maybe it's not that she's getting too much fuel, or percolating fuel. Maybe she's not getting enough air.

That led me to the electric choke. I removed the choke plate (flapper) and away I went to test my theory.

An hour's worth of experimental driving, without any stumbling or stalling, makes me think that the electric choke was slamming the plate closed at the wrong time. I'm not totally convinced yet, but if I get through another successful afternoon's driving on a warm day, without weird happenings, I'll be convinced.

Meanwhile...........oh yeah, back to the 30 horsepower.

Without that big ol' plate in the way, the pedal response is dramatically improved and she pulls like a calf on a milk bottle. :eek The response reminds of the way the old modified 427 reacted to the pedal...........instantly and with great enthusiasm. :D

Note: I said 30 "by-the-seat-of-your-pants" horsepower, but it is very noticeable. :_rock

P.S. She may be a bit nasty to fire up next New Year's morning, but I'm game. ;LOL

Well..Ok... But have you simply fired the motor and removed your Leaf guard pill box off the top of the carb...and tried to push the choke plate in while opening the throttle?

I mean if the E Choke is bad or the linkage is out of adjustment you should see movement in the plate.
But..what ever works ..I mean if you notice that much of a difference.. Frig it ..Run it like it is.

Heh Who Needs a choke when it's 30 below in Canada?? Besides.. you don't drive it in the winter anyway....:L

The old engine had a myriad of modifications, including ZL-1 cam, L-88 valves and springs and an 850-double-pumper with no choke.

When I got on it hard, it was as if something exploded under the hood. Instant reaction!!!

I never felt that kind of instant response from the 502 until now. :upthumbs

Cool.. Your running roller rockers too arn't you??

My '67 427 had a 780 on it with no choke. Ran great all year around. I just let it warm up a few minutes when it was cold out.

If the electric choke and its linkage are properly adjusted (and it's getting a continuous full 12 volts and is properly grounded), the choke butterfly should be perfectly vertical within a minute after starting the engine, unless the top corners of the butterfly are hanging up on the air cleaner, preventing it from opening fully.

Mark...

Gimme that carb and I'll mill the choke horn off. Who needs a choke??? BESIDES, on the stock air cleaner setup, the air has to go 'way up and then down the choke tower.

Tell you what. I'll bring the hacksaw over on Sunday. Got any rags to stuff down the bores? They usually burn pretty quickly in the combustion chambers.

See 'ya soon.

Mind you, when I get to Indy, I'm sure all Hell will break loose. ;LOL

(just a little inside joke there folks :D )

We like a good joke ;)

Glad to see the problem solved. I agree, " You don need no stinkin choke".
They just add obstruction to the mix and have no place on a "performance engine".

Best regards,
Gerry

PS Use locktite on the bolts cause they just keep coming loose. Must be all that HP

So, it's pretty much a certainty now. The choke has been the culprit all along.

If what I'm experiencing now holds true through the 1,600 mile round trip to Bowling Green, I'll consider it final.

I was getting gun-shy about turning the car off while out anywhere, knowing that I'd be facing the high probability of hard starting or sudden dying after a re-start.

The last few days have been clear sailing. (fingers crossed)

Janine, the inside joke is known by all those who convoyed through Indiana last year, on our way to Bowling Green. My engine suddenly died in heavy traffic, and I wasn't in the right lane. We were on an elevated section of the Interstate (in Indy, I think) and I had enough forward momentum to cut to the right and up over the curb. Cars were scattering everywhere; horns were honking; :eek and I jumped out drenched to the skin from the heat and frustration. All in all, a great time. :D

I think that was Louisville where that happened. At least that's where we had to waite on you to catch up. We sailed right through Indy to Damons.
