Fuel loading when hot

I read through my Holley stuff today, and it looks like it's time to clean the electric fuel pump. They suggest every 6,000 miles. I'm past 8,000 already.

Gas runs thru it...Clean.. What's the Gas do..make it dirty..??

I'm thinking, run it through the dishwasher when the Mrs. is out. Can't hurt, right?

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTRIC FUEL PUMPS:

Due to the current poor quality gasoline that’s available, it is recommended that periodically a can of dry gas be used to absorb
the water out of the fuel delivery system. The fuel filter element should be blown clean with compressed air every 6,000 miles and replaced every 12,000 miles to assure maximum protections. If your fuel pump fails to pump or fails to maintain adequate pressure, check the following:

1. Check the voltage at the pump to ensure 12-volt supply.

2. Check the fuel line (especially the fuel filter) for any obstruction. Use compressed air to blow the line free.

3. If this doesn’t solve the problem, turn the pump on and listen for a hum from the top of the pump. If there is no hum, the pump’s electrical system should be checked by a competent repairman. If the pump hums, it probably only needs to be cleaned.

The fuel pressure gauge is reading lower recently.....only 4psi at idle. I get lonely if I'm not under Heaven at least once a week.....so it's time to go in and get the pump and filter. ;)

unwind the 2000 feet of armature wire and chech for an open.

2a...If no obstuction is found, remove and install new fuel line and
replace fuel filter with a new filter not made by Holley.

3a.. After listening for Hum..determine that it is in fact Huming "Born To Be Wild". It it is Huming any "Barry Manilow" Tunes.. Immediately Remove the Pump and replace it with a Carter Electric Pump.

All these new fangeled gadjets confuse me. Give me a good old mechanical pump that works for decades and can flow more fuel than an exon tanker run aground in alaska.

You guys are cracking me up.

Heh Gerry..I'm with you on that.. The only problem is that the 502 does not have a Mechanical Fuel Pump Boss. Or in other words.. The block wasn't made for one.

So Bob and I are stuck with the electric's. The difference is He likes the "Saturn 5 Rocket Engine" sized fuel pump with a tap water sized reducer for the Carb as compare to my fish tank sized pump less the reducer to the carb.

OK, one question I have to ask.

Did either of you guys consider the 540 ?
What made you decide on the 502 in the first place?

I'm thinking about crafting a red fiberglass fuel tank for the roof with a 3" PVC running straight into the carb. Then would eliminate the electric pump. :naughty:

Yeah Gerry ..looked at alot of different set ups..including the 540..572.. etc.
There is a limit to how much power you can put down and use. And how you will be using the car. My needs were simple.. A boat laod of torque at low rpm range..street driven with good manors .. a non drag strip car ...just used for street cruzen and trips..etc and a completly assembled turn key motor with proven internals ......and didn't want to twist the frame or blow out rears and throw half shafts.

The 502 is a proven winner. It can be built many different ways or bought as a turn key motor. Becides .. My Friend Bill Got ne a great deal and between Bill and His Friend Mike they did me Right.

So far the 502 has been running like a champ. I still have some tuning issues but they are minor. 67Heaven has over 8000 miles on his motor and as far as I know it's been fine.

Thanks, those are all great reasons. I will be rolling over approx. 15,000 on mine later this month and so far so good except for the loosening bolts.:ugh
BTW I will probably be adding a 65 red/black 327 4 spd coupe for tooling around and GOOD gas consumption:D . Should pick it up within two weeks.:upthumbs

Ain't that the truth. I made the mistake of getting on it yesterday (to satisfy some cheering construction workers :Twist ). I was turning left and hadn't completely straightened out. Very quickly I was going up hill sideways (but controlled), and those big hairy tires were smoking.

Once I realized I had it under control, I thought....."Hmmmm, this is fun".....so I really punched it, banged second and continued up and over the rise and out of sight..........sideways. :eek

More fun than a barrel of monkeys. :W Nobody tell Mac. ;)
