I guess my back is against the wall....

Yeah I am glad things are working out for him, and he is not getting the shaft like I did over, and over. I don't know what was dropped in there, and I didn't get to see the damage, hopefully the heads can be fixed.

He does have AL heads rrubel.
 
THe valve sizes will be 1.6 and 2.02. I am considering having them ported, however I am not totally sure on that one. He is confident the heads can be repaired. Anyone know of any shops that will port those for a resonable amount?

He still isn't sure what went down the hole. He doesn't think it was a bolt because there were no thread marks, but it was something.
 
Porting is a waste of time on that car with the stock TPI. You will not be able to take advantage of the extra flow with the stock cam and intake. Even the 2.02/1.60 valves are not gonna make much differnece. The stock TPI is running out of breath by 5k. Save your money till you build the modified engine in a few years.

I do think I will be purchasing a setup from a member here on CAC. If he wants to sell, I am buying. He has the big mouth manifold with larger tube runners, and a ported plenum. I would have to get a larger throttle body, but he has injectors and the fuel rails for the manifold. That setup should be good to 350 hp, when I plan on doing futher engine work. If i get he heads done now they wont have to be done in the future. Either way you look at it the expense is there no matter what time frame.
 
I thought you were gonna build another engine for it down the road and rebuild this one stock? Port the heads that come on the other engine. Even if you port the heads and change the intake the stock cam is not gonna make power where that stuff will make a difference.

Well the heads have some damage that will have to be fixed. Some material will have to be added, and then machined. Whatever went down the hole, beat up the top of the piston, and the bottom of the heads. So if I have a machine charge to deal with, my thinking is that it would be cheaper to fix these and port them, rather then fix these and port another pair????


I am going to try to spend as much time down there as possible. I work till 3:30 five days a week so it will be for an hour only. I will try to make the most of it.
 
I just figured you were gonna keep the numbers matching engine intact when you pulled it in a few years. It is your car so you need to do whatever you feel is best. I just putting in my .02.

I appreciate everyones opinion. Is this not the best choice. Lets face it I will probably keep the car for a long while. That I am not worried about. WHat do you all think I should do with the heads

The 48mm TB will be fine. In fact, the 48 will feed well over a 383 CID engine. Make sure you get some 1.6 roller rockers to get a little more lift.:D

Get those Harland Sharps that Mad Mic was talking about. I think it would be a total waste to have the valve covers off and put those regular old 1.5 rocker arms in there. For another $200, you'll get probably 10 horsepower.
 
What other little valve train tricks can I use to free up some horsepower?
 
If something went into the cylinders and beat up the head and the pistons, how does the cylinder bore look ? did it get scored ?
It would be a shame to build it all up and end up having to tear it back down again.

Actually for the miles on the motor the cylinders looked somewhat good. He showed me a few cylinders that he said were loose, and he could tell by markings. Otherwise, I couldn't see any noticeable ridge on the cylinder walls. He is going to bore it .30 over, only becuase I said that was fine, and he agreed that going .20 would be more time consuming if he had to do it again, and the possibility of going more is always there.
 
Boring .030 over is the better option, it is more common and more packages are out there than there are for boring .020 over. There is a great thread in the C3 forum that talks about that.

Will the lifters and pushrods be new as well? Are the lifters roller lifters?

TPIS claims that their titanium retainers will give you 200 more RPM redline due to their lighter weight.
They also claim "if you have 3/8" screw in studs already in your cylinder heads and are going to purchase roller rocker arms, you should step up to 7/16" studs. This will stiffen the valve train and give a horsepower gain at little additional cost. Easy bolt in on aluminum heads." They're only $36 for a set of 16.

I know, it's great, ain't it? :L:L:L

You've already got the motor out so the tranny is ready for that new TC. Down the line, they'll have to drop the tranny to get to that TC so it just makes sense to do it now. If you can't drop the tranny yourself, you'll be paying someone a few hundred bucks to do it.

And I didn't even mention a gear swap!:D
