Why wouldn't it? Modern high-flow cats are not that restrictive.

What IS restrictive however, is Kalifornia law. You are not allowed to replace the 2-1-2 y-pipe system with dual pipes and dual cats. Sorry...

Cats are expensive. Spend the money elsewhere. Like getting more power :)

Joe

I'm in the process of replacing my 2-1-2, with true duals - No Cat -from either Mid-America or Corvette Central:s

Here in Virginia, all smog equipment is required to be installed as when it left the factory, just in order to pass the Safety inspection!

After 25 years, it doesn't have to work, but it still has to be there! Makes sense, right???????????

When my car fails this year, for the last time, I'm thinking about tru-duals with dual hi-flow cats anyway.

page62 -- You are not allowed to replace the 2-1-2 y-pipe system with dual pipes and dual cats.

Mine is already like that.
True dual exhaust with 2 cats.

So what Im allowed to do becomes a moot point.
What I plan to do... now thats the fun part.

:D :D :D

Steve.... lose the Cat's. At this point why bother. I'm converting my 2-1-2 into a true duals this summer now that I'm officially exempt forever from the MD sniffer test. 3" pipes, "X" pipe, Flowmasters...... no cat. I can't wait to wake the neighbors with some real power. Especially the little twit two doors down with the over modified GT 'Stang that has been waking me up for the last year. Makes a lot of noise, but it's still a Mustang.

............. Nut

I converted mine this past summer to true duals - No Cat -from Mid-America.. I replaced the mufflers with Borlas and no X pipe, I love it:)

Slickman, how was the sound with the mid-america mufflers? I'm planning on getting that kit. I hate to go for the extra $$$...for the Borlas, they must sound Great!

The ones from mid-america were not loud enough for me and I did not like the way it sounded. I tried to get Flowmasters but, none of the ones they have fit without doing some mod's. The Borlas fit like the OEM's and they sounded great. They were worth every dollar..

I replaced mine with true duals and no cats. I put stock mufflers back on with chrome exhaust tips. I'm running headers and it runs and sounds great, not too noisy but it still has a nice deep throaty sound to it.

Thanks, there's some car shows in April and Englishtown is having their swap-meet this Sunday. I'm going to have listen to some different exhaust notes before I pick mine.

In California you need to have cats if you have a 73 or later so for your 79 I would say to pass smog you will have to have them. Unless you have a way around that if you know what I am saying.

Doesn't it depend on the year? I don't think they came out with converters until the mid 70's........

I have true dual exhaust now with cats.
The 79's came with a 2-1-2 design but a PO replaced it.

I havent had any smog problems here.

"There is nothing like the sound of a small block chevy breathing through a set of Flowmasters". Thats a quote from someone, I forget where I heard it, but very true.

I doubt that it is an option in areas that have smog inspections.

It has always been my understanding that the first year of the cats on vettes was '75. Thats why us '74 owners have the last year of factory 'true duals / no smog stuff'.

Half true...'74 had duals and smog. Smog started everywhere in '71 and just got worse...:(

Im looking to go dual cats on my '82 that MAYBE (if the gods are smiling upon me) slip by Calif's smog laws yet stay legal. Every time at the smog check, the inspection was under the hood and standard tailpipe test. There was no under the car or on the rack inspection.

Cross-fire my fingers and hope.

true duals

It all depends on where the car was produced for in Calif all cars after 1974 had cats so any thing ealier didn't.
