Question: Replacing the Corvettes battery ?

I have a Optima Red Top in my 2003 50th Anniversary coupe, and it's given me 6 long years, but I have a headache over reading al the different opinions and sage advice on what AGM battery to use this time around. You name the brand, and I've read the pro's & Con's on each brand and all the horror stories about this one and the "One that blew up in my face and . . ."

I'm going to get some advil, Thank you ! :confused

Go to your local Chevy dealer and get the Delco Professional Battery for your '03. It really is the best one available. The proper CCA and RC. Ask C4C5specialist... the man knows!!

After listening to Paul (C4C5specialist) at CF seminar in 2011 at MAMW, I believe that the Professional Delco is the correct battery for the C5s. Paul told how problems occur in the C5 due to the incorrect battery; voltage and CCA/RC are very important. If you purchase the battery from a dealer, make sure you get the correct one as their parts listing will show various batteries for the C5, but only one is the correct battery. You want ACDelco Professional 78-6YR Part No 19001632 with 700 CCA and 120 RC. My original battery lasted 8 years and was still checking out to be OK when I replaced it. Paul told me at MAMW Fun Fest in 2009 when he looked at it that it was the original battery. Not saying that Optimas or others aren't as good or better, I just stick with OEM when possible.

Good advice, what the AC Delco Proffessional sell for,is it a AGM battery & does it come in a 75 series so it'll fit OK. Another Optima sells for close to $200.00 ?

Around 85 to 100 bucks online but they don't give the CCA or the RC numbers... I bought one at the chevy stealership for $120 and it was not the right one. 700 cca was right but only 95 RC.....back it goes.......

I believe the 75 battery series was replaced by the 78 series. My original battery was the 75 series; you really need the 78 series now. If in doubt, take measurements of your present battery and check it with the one I listed. I believe that I paid around $100 to $120 before my senior citizen discount. Since you have a 2003, the battery I recommended should fit in the compartment. GM did not change the battery compartment in the C5. Also, it is important for you to torque the terminals correctly. The torque should be 89 inch pounds and the hold down nut should be 12 foot pounds. Many people do not know how crucial the battery terminal torque is; another tidbit from Paul that he shares with everyone. BTW, keep your receipt as the battery is warranted by GM.

I watched both of the Video's and I believe what he says about 80% of the column lock problem being a low or bad battery. Just from owning a Optima Red Top, I have listened to so many people who bad mouth the battery as junk cause it was drained and when they took it to get it charged, the battery won't take a charge ?. . . Like do you take a minute and go the Optima website a watch any one of the How-To videos???? If the voltage in an Optima drops below 11 Volts it won't take a standard charge ! but that doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it needs a different procedure to charge it up. But it does point out about how many people, buy a battery and put in their Corvette and forget about it. I know the C5 has a very low "parasite" charge. But they clearly say they left the car in the garage for a month and now "It won't start !" ah Yeah ? I keep mine in the front garage and if I'm not going to use it for a week to 10 days, I open the hood and put the float charger on it. What's it take, two minutes ?

Looking for a good battery is one thing, but trying to find a top of the line AGM battery is hitting a rough spell. Exide and Optima make them, but I haven't found much to pick from.

I hope I didn't buy the wrong battery, but this is the one I just put in my C5.

Best battery for high-performance use is the Odyssey. Pricey...yes? But a great value in the end. Longer service life and much higher "pulse cranking amps" which is what really starts your engine. The top of the line Sears Die-Hard is a private labeled Odyssey and sells for a bit less, but the Sears version doesn't some in as many sizes and ratings as do the Odysseys.

I just put a new Odyssey in my C6 and, after I test it for awhile, I'm going to update that above review to cover that application.

Optima Red Top. Overrated. It doesn't live-up to it's marketing. Too many QC problems. Was much better when Optima was an independent maker but quality has slipped since it was taken over by Johnson Controls.

ACD Professional batteries are also a good choice, probably better than the Optima but fall short of the Odysseys.

As far as I can tell that is the Delco part number. On my correct battery it says....78 - 6YR 19001632 I see no other part numbers on it.....

In my dinky town there were 10 at one place and 5 at the other. I guess they are popular. I paid 85 dollars plus tax.....The Chevy place listed for 120 and would sell for 95.....I bought at the other shop.....

Duracell Battery

Hi All,

I just bought a 2004 Corvette. It has what appears to be, a brand new Duracell battery in it from Battery Plus. It reads, Group 86 part number SL 186 M CA at 32 degrees 775, CCA at 0 degrees 690. I looked on their site and that was one of two batteries that was listed for my car. Do any of you see a problem with this battery?
