So...how many of us take our Vetts out if it is raining?

Happy motoring, be safe :Steer . . . . . . . I assume those Goodyears are not runflats :confused

Bill :w

No the GS-D3s are not runflats. Ran first run group today. While it wasn't raining and the sun was out, the course surface was still damp and very slick. So slick that I even tried taking off in 2nd gear since I was getting nothing but wheelspin in first. Event organizer gave the first group one parade lap (low speed, follow the leader) and six hot laps instead of just five. Didn't help me one bit, first to last run only improved by 1-1/2 seconds. Oh well...wait till next year.

Sounds like fun anyway, I am sure I would suck at it ;LOLDo you do this kind of thing regularly?

Bill :w

I've often seen cars for sale that state "never been in the rain" and I always wondered what that means. If there are contaminants in rain water (i'm unaware), I'd like to think the frequent washing and detailing I do to my car would wash this issue away ;LOL

I wonder if the "not rain driven" attitude is different depending on where in the country you live?

Some parts of the US see rain year round. It would be almost impossible to enjoy driving your car if you lived in a place like Seattle and decided not to drive in the rain.

Where I live in California it doesn't rain much except during the winter. Over the spring, summer and fall the roads accumulate dirt, brake dust, pollen, and whatever else finds its way to the asphalt. When it finally does rain, the first few storms tend to turn the roads into a slick soup of the above ingredients. Maybe it's different in the cities around here, I don't know.

So it's not really the "rain" for me so much as the crud created on the road that gets churned by every passing vehicle.

PS-the first few rainstorms and the resulting "crud slick" does give people in Camrys and Accords the opportunity to spin their wheels a little bit.

True, it is not the rain per say it's all the other crap that comes with it. Not to mentioned your car always looks like s- - t after the rain with all the road debris that spattlers all over the car, wheels, exhaust and etc. then with black this even looks worse.

My 2 cents worth anyway,
Bill

Hi hoosier,

I used to run SCCA Solo II and some of the other local club events. Up to 30-40 events a year. Also ran the Solo II National Champioships from 1978 till 1986 and that was during my poor days when trailering or even driving the street car/race car to the event from California to someplace in the midwest (usually Salina, Kansas and one year in Gurnee, IL) was a real test of my love of the sport of autocrossing. Heavy into the credit cards and help from some of my friends. The last year I ran Nationals I ran in BP in a race prepared 1968 roadster vette and would have won if not for a one pylon penalty worth 2-seconds. I lost the championship by 1.5 seconds and came in 2nd. Believe me when I say I still, to this day, know which pylon I hit :bash

Now I run Corvette only events. Probably not more than 3 or 4 a year in my street driven C5. I'm not even optimized for autorcrossing in my class with the F45 selective ride option. The better non-Z06 C5s run the Z51 suspension and tires closer to real race rubber (Hoosiers, Kumhos) than street rubber. Local vette only events have about 50 cars for the event. SCCA Solo II events run close to and sometimes exceed 200 cars.

So a long answer to your question. BTW I grew up in Indianapolis (1957 -1962).

...Nevertheless, if I am out and about, and the rain catches me out while driving, then I don't even worry or think about it...

I've had the '80 out in light rain before more than a few times. Usually, this happens when the forecast says "chance" of rain and I've rolled the dice.

My wipers work great. The 80 is the first C3 I've owned with the delay system. Really nice. The first C3 I owned had low, high, and off- so this is a marked improvement. Although, since I don't do a lot of driving in the rain... I guess it really doesn't matter!

I do need to adjust the hood a bit. It seems the rubber stops along the rails on the insides of the fenders have run off and it has eliminated just enough height to prevent the wipers from coming out from under the hood. If I pop the hood release- no problems. Details, details, details.

The other issue is the seal around the t-bar. In heavy rain... the tops leak.

Oh well. Show me a C3 that doesn't leak and I'll show you an owner who has been to the brink of madness and back.

That sounds pretty :cool and a exciting way to pass the time. You can't take the :louIndy out of the man; what made you leave the hoosier State?

Bill :w

I was a kid and had to follow the family (returned to the Philippines).

I understand that, then you end up in CA I see. What do you do there for a living or do you just race :lou Vettes?

Bill :w

Work for a bank in a small branch. Way past the age and time to race professionally plus autocrossing is one thing were focus and attention is counted in seconds. Professional sports car racing requires that focus and attention in hours.

I tolally understand that. I could see where this could be an exspensive pass time too. Now give me a loan ;LOL

Rain....

If I'm not going anywhere I leave the vette in the garage, but if I don't have a choice I'll take it out in the rain. I don't like to take it out when there's a snowstorm and the roads are covered with ice and salt. The salt is what troubles me the most. But that's just me.

Rain is one thing but I don't drive mine in the :( winter at all, :ohnoes no so re- bob, she is in hibernation :nono for the winter.

This is my "daily" driver and I've heard a rumor that it snows in Michigan. So ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Let me see if I understand this, Remo: you don't drive your Corvette in the rain, you're so opposed to driving your Corvette in the snow you allow it to "winter" at Chateau Guy, and you spend the winter needing meds in order to prevent you from sending the CAC into meltdown mode with your "stir pot under the influence of CASA" posts.

Remo, has it occurred to you that you may be a "Fair Weather Corvette Owner?" Sheesh, it's just rain, Remo. And cleaning your Corvette after it's gotten a bit raiin streaked is good quality zen-time shared between you and your car.

Oh, and by the way: we have taken a staff vote: you will not be allowed to start another "What's your favorite Oil Filter?" thread this winter.

After reading my quote in your response - I realized I had a few spelling problems (now corrected). It's really hard for me to make any sense with all these meds your staff has me on.;squint: BTW - the PF46 is still considered the peoples choice for C5 oil filters but don't sell that DW2001R short. I think that's what all the C5R's went too after GM read my thread last year.
