Thoughts on the Nav System

I just ordered an 06 with Nav. I can follow maps but I love the capability to have eta to destination displayed and how long to the next turn. BTW, an earlier post asked what the DVD was for because the system was gps based. The DVD is for Maps. The system knows where it is from GPS and uses a compass and time distance calculations to move the car. All this is displayed on the DVD driven map. (At least that is how it works on My BMW and the Wifes Lexus) In my Airplane, the Maps are on a flash card, updated monthly. They all work the same way.

Nav System

I don't know what the cost of the Nav option is now however at the time I ordered my C6 the option cost was $1400.00. I was not sure at the time if it was worth getting since I'm very good with road maps. I have used the system for a while now and think it's one of the best decision I made. I recently returned from a cross country trip and used the Nav system. I can tell you it has road maps beat by a mile. To talk about all its advantages would take to long here. If you do a lot of traveling in your Vette get the option and you will be glad you did.

The C6 does have 2 slots one for the DVD/Nav and one for music CD's. You can play MP3's so you can get apx 180 songs per CD. If you kick in another $500 you can get a 6 Disc CD changer that mounts in one of the rear holes on the coupe. If you have a 2005 without MP3 just take it to the dealer and tell them you have static in your FM and it will not hold presets and they will do the upgrade for nothing

PS how do you make something shade in when your copying from someone else????

Why would a factory NAV system be any better than the factory stereo?
My guess is that it will be adequate at best; totally acceptable to Jo Average but frustrating to the 20% of the owners who demand excellence.

The new company car, ‘06 Mercedes S500, has the best factory Nav/entertainment system that I have seen – the NAV is almost as good as one of my last generation Garmins. The Team Owner’s girlfriend has a 06 Jeep with almost the same system but with a much larger display. It is so large that I find it distracting.

The Garmin rep told me that the automobile industry uses DVDs for map storage as part of a copyright agreement entered into with the suppliers of the digital maps.

Finally I would rather have any NAV system than none.

Whale - remember waiting for the old Inertial systems to warm up before we could fly? I have been told that the new INS/GPS system is ready to go a few seconds after power on but since I am flying stick and cloth airplanes these days I have no firsthand knowledge.

PS how do you make something shade in when your copying from someone else????

I just read 44 posts and only 4 or 5 even had a clue what the nav. unit is or is not capable of. The option costs $1400(not 3500), the new updates(2) are free to the 06 and newer owners. It holds a cd for the navigation operation of the unit and a seperate slot to hold and play cds at the same time the nav unit is on. You can go to the Chevrolet(Corvette) web site and see the unit and its capabilitys

Vertbilk is right, The Satnav works alongside the CD or radio. There are two slots: one for CD and one for the NAV. The SATNAV countdown to turnings appears on the HUD. It cuts in to the HUD a short distance before the turns with a graphic of the road layout and a bar which fills up as the turning is approached. You can have a split screen with a map at a chosen scale and a selection of other graphics such as Junctions/turnoffs ahead or a map at a different scale. You can choose flat maps or 3D maps.

It has touch screen and voice recognition. There is a separate volume choice for CD or NAV. There is a menu where you can store favorite destinations, waypoints and you can recall previous destinations. (I also think that there are different set of selections for each driver's memory). The only downside for me is that you can't change the destination when on the move. Maybe this is a safety issue but it means the co-driver can't reprogram either. Hope this helps.... I won't be without it!

1. you can not have a CD playing and a NAV DVD loaded
2. The CD player with the NAV is NOT MP3 capable
3. IT is a $3,500 OPTION!!!

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF ANY OF THIS IS TRUE?

If it is true (and I doubt that it is) the Chevy system is a lot cheesier than those on the Honda, Mercedes and Infiniti. As I recall, you "load" the data onto the system from the DVD, then use the CD player for music. I listen to CD's all the time in my family Odyssey, and my wife does in her CLK.

As for the MP3 issue, the retail order stats on my new '07 (being produced this week) list "MP3 playback" as a feature of the U3U Audio System with Navigation, et al.

I'll let you know for sure in a few weeks, after my Museum Delivery.

None of this is true
1. The Nav DVD stays in the lower slot marked DVD all the time. The CD goes in the upper slot marked CD and both work at the same time.

2. The Nav will play MP3's the 2005 needed an update to the unit but it plays them fine now.
3. I think the unit is a $1,700 option not sure about 2007 cost but it's not $3,500

I have an '05 C6 with the Nav system and single CD player. I always leave the DVD in (because according to the manual, the nav system doesn't work without it. It does use the GPS signal from the sat's to track your postion, and uses the DVD to display the maps), and I have no problems playing CD's or the radio. I don't use the voice recognition very often, so I don't know if it disables the CD player.
