I bought a pair of Magnaflow stainless steel mufflers on E-Bay for $350.00 delivered to my door, which I thought was a pretty good price. I installed the mufflers myself in about 45 minutes, with no problems whatsoever. The sound is absolutely great - just what I was looking for. Very deep tone, much deeper and more aggressive than the stock mufflers. Not obnoxious, though. I highly recommend them for anyone looking for a reasonably-priced alternative to Borla, B&B, Corsa, etc. It is snowing here, so it may be a while before I get to drive the car and see if I notice any seat-of-the-pants performance change. I can't wait!:s

Congrats!

Finally you went for the Magnaflows, I have nothing to say about them but the best. I hope you'll ejoy them as much as I enjoy mine. :Steer

Can you post some pics?

George :w

Yes, I finally took the plunge, and I am totally happy. I have attached a picture of the best angle I could get - the car is stashed in my garage for Winter. I have a few more pictures showing the connections to the stock system, if anyone is interested. Thanks to all who recommended this setup!!

Green LT1 - I believe you have to cut the original exhaust pipe to fit the new mufflers. Is this true? (you mentioned pics of the connections, would be nice to see). Also, would like to know if any resonance at normal driving speeds and at idol. I have been following most of the threads on aftermarket exhaust replacements and it appears all have some level of resonance over stock.

More Pics Please

These mufflers are at the top of my list. I have heard different stories about how they appear to hang low or crooked but have never seen them in person.

How did they mate to the OE hangers? Any modifying or torquing into place?

Thanks,
Jeff

It is true that the original mufflers must be cut off, as they are welded in the original system from GM. Per the instructions I received with the mufflers, I cut pipe 5" to the rear of each muffler. The old muffler and the old hanger attached to the muffler are removed. The Magnaflows have a mounting tab on the top of the muffler, and come with new metal hangers that fit into the stock rubber encapsulated hanger brackets attached to the frame in the rear. The intallation job is very easy, and requires no special tools (I used a reciprocating saw to cut off the old mufflers). I was so happy when I turned the key and first heard the new sound. VERY low, deep rumble at idle. I heard no interior resonance, even when I revved the engine to 2,000 to 2,500 rpm. However, I will report back when I actually get to drive the car on the road (snowing here). I still have the installation instructions, so if anyone is interested, I can scan them and attach. As far as the look of the mufflers installed, I think they look great, but like many things, tastes vary. The mufflers are very high quality polished stainless steel, and are STRAIGHT THROUGH design. Look into the rear of the stock mufflers and see how far you can see. With the Magnaflows, I can shine a flashlight down BOTH of the rear tips and see all the way out to the muffler inlet pipes. I recommend these highly.

I would love to see some installation pics. I am having trouble with mine sagging too low. The supplied brackets don't seem to be stiff enough.

HTRK-1, I needed to put the supplied hangars in my vise and bend them with a hammer to achieve the desired installation height. The brackets themselves seem sturdy enough, but like anything else, a small amount of tweaking is often needed to get things exactly the way you want. I have attached a picture of the passenger-side muffler, as recently installed. Hopefully that will be of some help to you.

how did you get your frame so shinny?? nice exhaust BTW.

Same question, the frame is like it's just going out of the production lane!!

Thanks for the compliments on the fame of my '96. I really can't take much credit for that. I am the second owner of the car. The originial owners were a couple in their 60's who just drove the car on nice days, and took incredibly good care of the car. They had towels on the seats and an the footwells to keep the leather/carpet like new. It worked. It has 38,000 babied miles on it, and everything is like new. I raise the car up on ramps every Winter and detail the underside, along with changing the oil and oil filter (Mobil 5W-30 and K&N oil filter). The car never sees rain or wet pavement. However, when the weather is nice, I drive it often and enjoy it!

I also was thinking about these mufflers also, but what I want is the chrome LT1 tips and not the two dual pipes on each side
do they make the square chrome ones?

No, to my knowledge, they only make the dual round outlets. The only major brand I am aware of that makes the LT1 square tips is the Borla system.

I installed the Magnaflow SS Mirror Finish mufflers on my car also which is a 92 LT1. I did quite a bit of research on mufflers & catbacks etc. & I thought the Magnaflows looked the best. After having them installed & driving the car for about 500 miles I agree that they look awesome & sound even better. You get that nice burbble at idle, an agressive throaty sound cruising around town with some interior resonance but not a whole lot (I can easily carry on a conversation with someone or listen to the stereo on low vol. no problem). They Rock! I love it when I pull up to a light and people are looking and you just know they're thinking - "whoa, check those out". Instant respect for the "Kool Blu" Quasar Blue Beast. Thanks Green LT1 for the tip on bending the brackets. I tried to shim mine up but that turned out to be a bad fix. Wide Open Performance at it's Best man!

:cool

Doutdoor, you are very welcome! Glad to help out. The Magnaflows are high-quality, polished stainless steel, they sound great, are easy to install, and are much more reasonably priced than any of the cat back systems on the market. More people should at least look into them as an option. If anyone has any other questions or needs any other installation photos, just let me know.

Greenlt & DoutD

I am starting to complie my list of mods to do for "HER" Vette, since Christmas day is fast arriving, (Her Present) ;)

The first will be the basic mods that I always follow on any hi-perf project, better air in & better air out. My question ..... are these magnaflows Advertised to increase hp & performance? and if so, what are the claims, i know you havent driven yours yet GLT, but with all the excellent reserach you have done, you must have some idea.
Will I improve hp & perf combining these mufflers with a new exhaust system ?

Thanks guys, many more questions to follow.......

Idaho Slim, Magnaflow certainly does not go out of its way to advertise the specific power increase to be expected with these mufflers, but, reading between the lines, I get the impression that something on the order of 10-12 HP is to be expected. Magnaflow does not offer the complete cat back system for the "92-'96 LT1 because they saw the most gains from replacing just the mufflers. The rest of the system between the cats and the mufflers is pretty good on an LT1 - the mufflers are the weakest link. I would not go out on a limb and say that one could not see a greater gain in HP if a complete Flowmaster, Corsa, B&B or Borla cat back system is installed. However, I went for the Magnaflow system because it will give you 80% - 90% of the gain of those systems, for a fraction of the price. The mufflers sound absolutely great, too! I spent several months researching this topic, and there are many different opinions out there. I will say, however, that those who went for the Magnaflow mufflers on the '92-'96 LT1 seem to be the happiest, all things considered.
