From what I remember, you said this motor was a screamer, as all 327s should be. This rebuild looks to capitalize on that fact.

BTW, it's real good to see that you get your boys involved with the wrenching. My old man did the same for me when I was a kid. Though I've been working on everybody's car but mine lately, I really appreciate the driveway education I got. Learning what I did has pulled me out of several jams. So "thanks" to all the dads who show their sons how an engine runs.

Bullit

You betcha... however the two boys are less than excited most of the time.

So I'm trying to make the connection in their brains.... hard work=rewards

So that being said,

We continued on head #2 today

Lapped the valves
Put the seals in

and Lo & behold I'm one spring hat short & 1 retainer.

SHEEEEETTTTTTTT!

So I'ts Sunday
the Machine shop is closed ( they have my other set of 461 heads & all the bits )

So I'm outta gas....

Next week, the saga continues
Final set the crank
Start droppin pistons in....

Now all I have to do is find the mating car!

Stay tuned for another exciting episode of..

VIG IN THE GARAGE!

9/14 Update

So here's where we are at today!

The goal today

Is load the pistons, set cam & chain & bolt heads on.

Yeah the heads are on just for the beauty shot.

MAJOR SETBACK

So just after loading the cam & putting the timing chain on...I remembered I just snugged the main bearing caps on and did not do final torque...... brought em all up to 50...... Set for 60

Coming up to 60ft lbs on 2nd torque pass
( at The #4 main bearing cap ) she went SNAP.. my ARP stud was fine.. but I pulled the threads in the block!

So I cleaned up everything today and put her away.

I called the machine shop and they stated Helicoil was the way to go.

So
A) Junk the block?
B) Helicoil?
C) Open to suggestions.

Just to LIVID to think clearly!
Thoughts...comments...suggestions?

HELP!

Vig!

Hi Vig,
Don't worry about the heli-coil, it will hold just fine. I've heli-coiled many blocks without a single failure.

Mike

After setbacks

3 pix of todays stuff

ONE

TWO

Timing chain with button

Three

Upside down small block

9/15 update

Heads on
New ARP hardware
( sealant on head studs so no leaky-leaky)
Had to remove cam button.. the Chevy timing cover did not like it.

Lifters in
Pushrods in
Rockers on but not adjusted

and the front

Yes I know I have to finish painting the front

And the windage tray

this was a PAIN to get right!

So this is where we leave off

Sunday 3:00pm

I have to get a new timing cover gasket.
and side drain spickets for coolant in the block.

So off to the auto parts store we go.

Next week
Fix an oops
On the drivers side head, I opened up the castings for extra clearance for the pushrods.

Well it needed it, I forgot to do it in the pass side and a couple of em bind.

So mount timing cover
Install fuel pump & pushrod
Put on harmonic balancer
Get new lockwashers for flexplate
Put on intake & carb
Clean up my aluminum Vette rockers
Oil pan
Dip stick
etc etc

Vig!

looking sweet vig! can't wait till you fire that thing up and tell us about it!

Fire it up!

Hmmm that's going to take a bit of doing. I do not have anything to put it into yet!

The only thing my budget currently allows is this!

Only 8K such a deal HUH?

Vig!

Uh you want to explain that Vig?!

What about your sharks, I thought thats what it was for?

Well

This WAS going to be a replacement for my 73 motor... then the 461 heads do not have the acc holes for A/C so I got this wild idea... get another Vette.. so maybe I'm in the wrong room... but it's still good info.

Oops
